New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Bar Council of India (BCI) has asked the Bar Council of Delhi to examine the conviction of advocate Prashant Bhushan by the Supreme Court in a contempt case for tweets against the judiciary, and the penalty of Rs 1 it levied and proceed as per law.
The state Bar Council grants a licence to a person to practice as a lawyer and has powers to either suspend or take away this right of its members, under certain situations, under the Advocates Act. Bhushan is enrolled as an advocate under the Bar Council of Delhi.
The BCI resolution said: “The General Council of the Bar Council of India has unanimously resolved to direct the Bar Council of Delhi, where Prashant Bhushan is enrolled as an Advocate, to examine the matter and proceed as per law and rules to decide the same as expeditiously as possible.”
The BCI said it is of the view that the tweets and statements made by Bhushan and verdict of the apex court need thorough study and examination by the Bar Council in the light of statutory duties, powers and functions conferred on it under the Advocates Act, 1961. The decision was taken following a meeting held on Thursday.
The Supreme Court, imposing a token fine of Re 1 on Bhushan, said it was not afraid of either sentencing Bhushan or of debarring him from the practice.
A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra (since retired), B.R. Gavai and Krishna Murari said: “We are not afraid of sentencing the contemnor either with imprisonment or from debarring him from the practice. His conduct reflects adamance and ego, which has no place to exist in the system of administration of justice and in noble profession, and no remorse is shown for the harm done to the institution to which he belongs.”

Shirley Setia gets fans nostalgic with cover of ‘Na tum jaano na hum’

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Singer-actress Shirley Setia, who recently made her OTT debut in “Maska”, has come up with a soulful cover of a romantic hit number.
She has released a cover of “Na tum jaano na hum” from the 2000 film “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai”, which marked the debuts of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel.
The song was originally sung by Lucky Ali, and has now been recreated by Abhijit Vaghani and sung by Shirley.
This song was conceptualised, composed, sung and shot during quarantine and has been created by the artistes from their own homes.
“I’ve done 3 songs as part of this little collaboration, and all 3 of them are songs that I have been very attached to and loved. ‘Na tum jaano na hum’ more so, as it was picturised in New Zealand, and that’s where I am from. I’ve always been a huge fan of Hrithik sir since then, and while in lockdown when Abhijit and I were discussing about songs, even he felt that it would be nice to hear the song in a female voice as the iconic song has been originally sung by Lucky Ali,” said Shirley.
She had started her career in New Zealand with song covers and received a lot of love and appreciation for the same.
She has diversified into acting along with being a singer. She will be soon making her Bollywood debut with “Nikamma” starring Shilpa Shetty and Abhimanyu Dasani.

Islamabad, The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has announced that lawyers will observe a countrywide strike on Thursday to protest what it called the “unconstitutional moves” of the federal government regarding Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s tenure extension and the high treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
According to a press release issued by the body on Wednesday, lawyers will observe a full-day strike tomorrow when they will hold protest and condemnation meetings in their respective bar rooms against the government measures to grant an extension in service to the incumbent army chief and “rescue” Musharraf from punishment in the high treason case, The Dawn reported.
PBC Vice Chairman Syed Amjad Shah and the chairman of its executive committee, Sher Muhammad Khan, strongly condemned the “belated efforts and maneuverings of the federal government” after yesterday’s order of the Supreme Court in the case pertaining to Gen Bajwa’s extension, according to the statement.
They said the government had rectified its mistakes and brought about amendments in some relevant laws in an attempt to “overcome their inefficiency” in the matter of granting extension to the army chief.

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre and state governments to furnish their responses on a plea seeking a specialised force to give “foolproof security” to all courts, judges, lawyers, litigants and witnesses in the country.
A bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari issued notice to Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, the Bar Council of India and the Supreme Court Bar Association on a PIL filed by advocate Durga Dutt who represents his colleague Karunakar Mahalik. The apex court has posted the matter for further hearing on January 27.
The plea said, “There is a crying need to replace the police with a dedicated and special system to provide full scale security to all the persons related to the courts and tribunals including the litigants and the witnesses, so that the problems in regard to safety and security are addressed in a better way in consultation with the specialised agencies.”
