New Delhi, At least 10 people, all with criminal antecedents, were arrested on Tuesday for indulging in arson and setting vehicles afire during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia University here on Sunday.
“Out of the 10 arrested, three are bad characters of the area. They were identified and put under arrest,” said a senior police officer, adding that none of them are Jamia students.
He also said raids are being carried out in various parts of Delhi’s south east districts to nab those who indulged in violence during protests.
Delhi Police has registered two separate cases against unknown people for arson and rioting on Monday.
Jamia Millia Islamia University had turned into a battlefield on Sunday with police entering the campus and using force, following violence and arson during protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

New Delhi, New South Wales in Australia rolled out high-definition cameras on Sunday to catch people using their cellphones while driving, media reports said.
The technology is intended to target illegal use of cellphones through fixed and mobile trailer-mounted cameras, New South Wales Minister for Roads Andrew Constance was quoted as saying by the CNN.
The cameras use Artificial Intelligence to scan images and zero in on the offenders. The identified images will be verified by authorised personnel, and the images will be securely stored and managed, authorities said.
As many as 45 portable cameras will be set up across the Australian state at unknown locations and without warning signs in the next three years, CNN affiliate Sky News Australia reported.
In the initial three months, offending drivers will receive a warning letter, after which offenders will face fines of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and penalty points on their driving licences.

Washington, The US Department of Defence has confirmed that two US soldiers were killed after an attack on a joint US-Afghan military operation in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province on Saturday.
“Both soldiers died February 8, 2020 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, as a result of wounds sustained while engaged in combat operations,” said the Pentagon in a statement released on Sunday, adding that the incident is under investigation, Xinhua reported.
Both soldiers were assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), according to the statement.
US media reported Saturday that a firefight had taken place between Afghan and American soldiers in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province earlier in the day, leading to fatalities on both sides.
The US military described the Saturday incident in a separate statement, saying “an individual in an Afghan uniform opened fire on the combined US and Afghan force with a machine gun. We are still collecting information and the cause or motive behind the attack is unknown at this time”.
Facebook buys start-up that uses AI vision to find location

San Francisco, Facebook has acquired Scape Technologies — a London-based computer vision start-up working on location accuracy beyond the capabilities of GPS.
Full terms of the deal remain as yet unknown, although a Companies House update reveals that Facebook Inc now has majority control of the company (more than 75 per cent).
“However by looking at other filings, including a recent share issue, I understand the price could be about $40 million,” TechCrunch reported on Saturday.
The start-up’s cloud-based “Visual Positioning Service” translates images into 3D maps that deliver a precise outdoor location across entire cities.
It is pertinent to note that it’s not yet clear what Facebook intends to do with Scape. But, the augmented reality (AR) glasses may be the best fit.
Founded in 2017, Scape Technologies was developing a “Visual Positioning Service” based on computer vision which lets developers build apps that require location accuracy far beyond the capabilities of GPS alone.
New Delhi, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here on Monday arrested former New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (Noida) Chief Engineer Yadav Singh in a case of awarding Rs 116 crore projects to private companies, officials said.
The CBI had registered in January 2018 the case alleging criminal conspiracy, misuse of official position and acceptance of bribes by Singh from the accused contractors and firms for awarding contracts.
The agency also named five private persons, unknown public servants and private persons in the case.
The CBI had registered the case on the Allahabad High Court orders in 2015.
In its FIR, the CBI alleged that the then Chief Maintenance Engineer (Singh) in conspiracy with other officers/officials of Noida as well as the said contractors had awarded several contracts worth Rs 116.39 crore to the five firms in gross violation of tender norms and procedures.
Singh is also being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the case.

Today mark the centenary of the publication of ‘Mook-Nayak’, founded by Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Exactly on January 31st, 1920, Baba Saheb Ambedkar launched this fortnightly to give voice to the voiceless as reflected in its name. I wont go into much research of this as many scholarly articles of already appeared on it commemorating a century of it. It is important to reflect on the influence Baba Saheb Ambedkar on media in India. Whether it was there or what is that we can safely call an Ambedkarite media. People may differ but I write based on my experiences and interactions with whole lot of Ambedkarites and those who were part of Baba Saheb’s mission. I feel extremely proud that I could interact and learn a lot from intellectual giants Bhagwan Das ji, NG UKe Saheb, L R Balley, V T Rajshekar, J V Pawar, Raja Dhale, Vijay Surwade and many more who had been regularly writing and contributing in different forms to strengthen mission Ambedkarism and its intellectual ethos. There are hundreds other unknown soldiers of the movement who in different nooks and corners of the country started various journals and periodicals to spread it in their impact domains and areas.

Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Firebrand Hindu leader Sadhvi Prachi, after the murder of Hindu leader Kamlesh Tiwari in Lucknow, has said that she also faces a threat to her life.
She said that Tiwari’s killing was the doing of Jihadis (Islamic militants).
The Sadhvi, while talking to reporters in Haridwar on Sunday, has asked the union Home Minister and the governments of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh to provide her security.
“I have received threats from the ISIS on several occasions. I believe firmly in God and have not discussed this till now. But the murder of Kamlesh Tiwari has upset me. A few days ago, some unknown persons came to my ashram and made inquiries about me. I feel that I need security,” she said.
Sadhvi Prachi alleged that jihadis were being given protection in India by the Congress and this should be thoroughly probed.
“The Yogi government should also probe why Kamlesh Tiwari’s security was withdrawn and action should be taken against officials responsible for this,” she said.
It may be recalled that former Hindu Mahasabha leader and president of the Hindu Samaj Party, Kamlesh Tiwari, was shot dead in his office in Lucknow on Friday by two men who came wearing saffron robes.
Without strengthening and involving women in our movements we cant build a strong Bahujan movement as espoused by Jotiba Phule
This image may be subject to copyright
1068 x 393
For any one to understand Joti Ba Phule, it is the pre-essential quality that change begins from home. We speak a lot, lecture others about change and communicate with people in such a language unknown to them or un-understandable to them. Many times, I found, people speak of their ‘knowledge’ and not what the audiences want.
In India, the biggest challenge for those who claim to be intellectuals or in public life, is the vast gap between their ‘public image’ and their personal lives. Not that we want to know about every one’s personal life but the gap in perception and ideological framework is big. When your ideology at public is different than what you practice in person, then, the ideological frame is just an illusion and will collapse anytime.
Why I am saying so because we all remember our great leaders and philosophers, remind other what they did and read out their ‘biographies’ but rarely attempt to learn from their life and mission which is important for all of us. And that way, Jotiba Phule remain the biggest revolutionary of India, an ideal person who not only build up the leadership qualities in his wife Savitri Phule but also encouraged her to take up the leadership.

Paris, (Samajweekly) A patient diagnosed with pneumonia near Paris on December 27, 2019 actually had the novel coronavirus, the media reported on Tuesday citing his doctor as saying.
Yves Cohen, head of emergency medicine at Avicenne and Jean-Verdier hospitals near Paris, told the media that the patient was a 43-year-old man from Bobigny, north-east of Paris, reports the BBC.
Cohen said that the patient was exhibiting what later became to be known as the main symptoms of coronavirus, including a dry cough, fever and trouble breathing.
He was hospitalised on December 27, 2019, four days before the World Health Organization’s China country office was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause being detected in the city of Wuhan.
The French patient told French broadcaster BFMTV that he had not travelled before falling sick.
Cohen said two of the patient’s children had fallen ill but that the wife had not shown any symptoms.
But the doctore pointed out that the patient’s wife worked at a supermarket near Charles de Gaulle airport and could have come into contact with people who had recently arrived from China.
“We’re wondering whether she was asymptomatic,” the BBC quoted Cohen as saying, while he called for the potential link to be investigated further.
Until now, the country’s first three cases of coronavirus were confirmed on January 24.

Auckland, A massive fire at the Auckland Skycity Convention Center construction site has been continued to rage on for over 24 hours on Wednesday, which would impact the 2021 APEC conference.
The fire, which started on Tuesday afternoon, is believed to be ignited by a torch used to heat and seal waterproofing materials on the roof of the building under construction as the scheduled venue for 2021 APEC meetings, Xinhua news agency reported.
Local fire emergency department worked round the clock to control the fire, but had to sacrifice the roof to allow crews better access to the fire. The fire continued overnight with flames and heavy smokes seen across the city.
It is unknown yet how the fire has destructed the building, which was due to be finished by August or September next year.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said on Wednesday morning that the fire could impact the APEC conference in 2021, but will not jeopardize Auckland as the event’s host city.
Civil defence department issued an emergency alert on Tuesday night to mobile phones across Auckland. Public health officials are advising members of the public to stay away from the CBD and out of the smoke.
Traffic in the Auckland CBD was diverted with multiple road closures and several nearby office buildings were closed due to safety concerns.

Chikkamagaluru (Karnataka), (Samajweekly) The Karnataka Forest Department has busted a pangolin trading racket in the state’s Chikkamagaluru district, and seized scales of the mammal which are much in demand in traditional Chinese medicine, officials said on Thursday. 10 people have been arrested so far.
“A 10-member pangolin trading gang was arrested on Tuesday. Right now we are hunting for the gang’s 11th member, Ramesh, in Bengaluru,” Chikkamagaluru’s Deputy Conservator of Forests, N.H. Jagannatha, told IANS.
The 10 accused have been arrested under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act and scales of three pangolins and six cell phones have been seized from them.
The arrested were identified as Abdul Rehman from Uppalli in Chikkamagaluru town, Naved Basha from Kalaspura, Dharmesha and Mallesha from Hosambala, Mahendra from Nagarahalli, Srinivasa and Pradeep from Sakrepatna, and Vishwanath, Sundaresh, and Mohan Kumar from Javagal.
Ramesh, who is being sought, was expected to deliver a consignment of pangolin scales to unknown persons in Bengaluru, Jagannatha said, adding that this could change between some more hands within the city and beyond as well.
“Developments in Bengaluru will prove to be of most crucial nature in this case,” he said.
Forest officials are tracking if the consignment is destined for Bengluru or overseas.
According to officials, the racket came to light with the arrest of just one person, and they managed to connect the dots and nab all the other nine as well and start the hunt for the 11th man.
“We could not track Ramesh initially because of some gaps. We also do not have police like powers,” Jagannatha said.
Moscow, (Samajweekly) Russia on Saturday celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s Victory over Nazi Germany in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War amid restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Large-scale celebrations have been postponed to a later date, however, many of them will be held online, so Russians will be able commemorate the day without leaving their homes, reports TASS news agency.
Addressing the nation, President Vladimir Putin said: “We will necessarily celebrate the jubilee date as usual – widely and solemnly and will do it with dignity as our duty tells us with regard to those who went through sufferings, achieved and accomplished this Victory.
“We will have both our main parade on Red Square and the Immortal Regiment people’s march.”
Putin is slated to lay flowers at the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Gardens, Moscow.
The traditional Victory Day parade this year was supposed to be larger than usual in honour of the anniversary, but due to security reasons it was postponed to a later date after restrictions were lifted.
However, celebratory military air show will still be held this year in 47 Russian cities, involving about 600 aircraft and helicopters.
Meanwhile, Immortal Regiment’s march will be held online, said the TASS news agency report.
Everyone can upload photos of their ancestors and their war stories to the event’s website, which will be used in a video and broadcast on federal channels, screens in metro trains, online.
Corona Lockdown: Not scared of the virus, but we will die of hunger……
This image may be subject to copyright
671 x 372
Since the COVID-19 lockdown, Indian news media has focused on the patients, efforts of the medical fraternity, police and government departments. There is no doubt that these frontline fighters deserve a big salute for all they did and are doing to save lives.
A careful scrutiny of news content on the web, especially the social media one could draw a fact that people are not scared of Corona but fearful of hunger, employment, salary, EMI, job loss, loss in business, etc. Few are actually scared of corona and most of the ones, who are scared, are the ones sitting in their posh villas and posting videos on their newly learnt skills in cooking, experimental cuisines, time spent with their loved ones, playing games, zoom family meetings etc. They have their rights to enjoy the moments of togetherness too.
Betrayal by mainstream media
What has been ignored by the mainstream media is the government’s blindness, along with lack of empathy, towards the brewing social unrest among the lower middle class, lower class, landless labourers, the homeless, poor and migrant labour. These people together shall be the biggest victims of the corona lockdown. These sections of the society earned their dignified livelihood with a sense of pride and self esteem, although on a hand to mouth existence basis. Yet they were happy and led a meaningful life. Savings if any were very meagre. Most of these people do not fall in the Below Poverty Line (official) category. What these people are not used to is to stand everyday for two to three times in a queue for food . They find it undignified to be fed by some unknown person, an organisation or the government at large.
Jhabua bypoll: Cong looks to regain power, BJP to splurge advantage

600 x 399
Bhopal, On October 21, Jhabua electorate would exercise its franchise for the third time in 11 months. Their choice at both previous polls – for Vidhan Sabha in November and for Lok Sabha in May – fell on the same person, the BJP’s Guman Singh Damor, a former chief engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department.
Damor first humbled Vikrant Bhuria in the Assembly elections in December and then his father Kantilal Bhuria in the Lok Sabha elections.
BJP asked him to honour the larger mandate for Ratlam-Jhabua parliamentary seat. Congress has had a long winning record in the constituency reserved for scheduled tribes. During the past few years it has paid for the chronic factionalism.
In the last year’s assembly polls Congress rebel Xavier Meda garnered a substantial share of 35,943 votes paving the way for the BJP’s victory in Jhabua by over 10,000 votes.
Meda, a former MLA from the constituency who belongs to Jyotiraditya faction, has returned to the party and was roped in to propose the name of Kantilal Bhuria. Meda, who was himself an aspirant for the Congress ticket, has also been asked to lead the campaign. What has been offered as quid pro quo is unknown.Kantilal Bhuria’s proximity to former chief minister Digvijaya Singh is the key reason for Scindia faction’s indifference to the campaign. Digvijaya Singh too misses no opportunity to corner Scindia. Intra-party wrangles have made the Congress’ task tougher.
