Covid-19: Indo-Pak check post in Punjab’s Attari closed

Chandigarh, The movement of people and commodities from Pakistan at the joint check post (JCP) at Attari near Amritsar in Punjab was suspended indefinitely on Friday as a precautionary measure against coronavirus, officials said. Also, commodities arriving from Afghanistan via Pakistan would also not be allowed to enter India through this Attari-Wagha JCP, around 30 km from Amritsar, a Customs official told IANS. Travel by Indian devotees from Dera Baba Nanak town through the Kartarpur Sahib corridor to visit Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Shakargarh tehsil in Narowal district of Pakistan is also likely to be suspended soon, it was learnt. The 4.1 km corridor links Dera Baba Nanak town in Gurdaspur district with Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara. The trade with Pakistan across the Attari-Wagha border has already been low after the levy of 200 per cent trade tariff on goods by India after the Pulwama attack. He should present receipts. The nation wants to know why he hid 23 bank accounts from the ECP. He should be held accountable about the millions of dollars he took,” said Ahsan, The News International reported. India, Pakistan sign Kartarpur Corridor agreement

New Delhi, India and Pakistan on Thursday signed the operationalising modalities agreement for the Kartarpur Corridor to allow Indian pilgrims to visit the holy shrine throughout the year. The agreement paves the way for inauguration of the Corridor next month ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. The signing ceremony took place at the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Zero Point, International Border, Dera Baba Nanak. The travel will be visa free and the pilgrims can visit individually and also in groups. Under the agreement, Indian government will inform Pakistan authorities about the list of the pilgrims 10 days in advance and pilgrims will be notified through message of mail four days ahead of the travel. The 4.2 km-long corridor from the Indian side in Dera Baba Nanak area in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district will be completed by October 31, a week before celebrations begin to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The corridor is likely to be inaugurated by the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Imran Khan respectively, on November 9. Everyday, 5,000 Indian pilgrims will be allowed to visit the holy site. CPEC to inflict heavy debt burden on Pakistan: US

Washington/Islamabad, The US has warned that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would only benefit Beijing and inflict heavy debt burden on Islamabad. Addressing a gathering at the Wilson Center, a Washington think-tank, US South Asia Assistant Secretary Alice Wells said the multi-billion-dollar project would take a toll on Pakistan’s economy, Dawn reported. Wells emphasised the CPEC was not an aid to Pakistan but a form of financing that guaranteed profits for Chinese enterprises, with little benefits for Islamabad. “The CPEC’s most expensive single project is upgrading the railway from Karachi to Peshawar. When the project was initially announced, the cost was set at $8.2 billion,” she said. But in October 2018, Pakistan’s Railways Minister announced that they had negotiated the cost down to $6.2 billion, a saving of $2 billion, she said. “He explained that Pakistan is a poor country and can’t afford this huge burden of loans,” the US diplomat said...

Goyal reviews DFC projects, asks railways to speed up work

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Railways Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday reviewed the progress of the ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridors, and was apprised that the Western Corridor, connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai, and the Eastern Corridor, starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana (Punjab) to terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal, will be completed by December 2021. Goyal also directed the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFFCIL) management team to take necessary steps to speed up the project to compensate the loss of time due to the lockdown. The Railway Ministry said that Goyal, during the meeting, also advised the officials to identify the most challenging area and come up with solution in a mission mode. “He suggested that involving young fresh minds to suggest best solutions may be encouraged,” the ministry said. “During the meeting, it was decided that strict monitoring of work of all contractors to be done. Resolution of all issues, including coordination with the states, to be done on a mission mode. Innovative mechanisms to constantly monitor the weekly progress of the project to be evolved,” it said. The DFC is one of the largest rail infrastructure projects undertaken by the government. The overall cost is pegged at Rs 81,459 crore. DFCCIL has been set up as a special purpose vehicle to undertake planning, development, mobilisation of financial resources, construction, maintenance and operation of the Dedicated Freight Corridors. In the first phase, the organisation is constructing the Western DFC (1,504 route km) and Eastern DFC (1,856 route km) spanning a total length of 3,360 route km...
