Snowden’s residence permit in Russia automatically extended

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Moscow, (Samajweekly) The residence permit of Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents on US surveillance programmes in 2013 and has been living in Russia, was automatically extended until July 15 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the countrys measures to curb the infection, a law enforcement source said. Snowden’s residence permit expired on April 30. He submitted all documents for its extension in mid-March, TASS News Agency reported on Saturday. In late March, the Russian Interior Ministry decided to automatically extend residence permits for all holders. “Due to anti-coronavirus measures, Snowden, just like all other residence permit holders, had this document automatically extended until June 15. Therefore, his residence permit remains valid. Later, a decision will be made about whether it should be extended by three more years upon Snowden’s request and in line with the current legislation,” the source told TASS News Agency. Meanwhile, Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told TASS that his client stays in home and observes the self-isolation regime. “There is nothing we can say as long as self-isolation remains in place. We are all staying home,” he said. In 2013, Snowden leaked information on the methods of electronic surveillance by US intelligence services, including illegally wiretapping foreign leaders. Decide on assets’ release plea: Delhi HC to Kochhar’s firm

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Delhi High Court has asked Pacific Capital Service Private Limited owned by Deepak Kochhar if it wishes to pursue its plea for the release of assets seized by the ED under the PMLA before this court or in Mumbai. Deepak Kochhar is the husband of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar. The plea filed by Kochhar’s firm through lawyer Vijay Aggarwal had sought the release of documents, cash and electronic gadgets seized by ED under Section 17 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The Delhi HC query came after the respondent, the Enforcement Directorate, pointed out that a similar petition had already been moved in the Bombay High Court. Justice Anup Jairam Bambani thereafter granted more time to the firm to decide on its stand and posted the matter for further hearing on August 25. “As per the amended Section 8(3)(a) the PMLA, the seizure of a property can only continue for a period of 365 days from the confirmation of the seizure by the ED. However, even after the lapse of the said period, no complaint in terms of Section 45 of the PMLA has been filed by the ED in the present case,” the plea said. It said that earlier there was no time limit prescribed under the PMLA for the completion of investigation. However, the situation changed by virtue of an amendment dated April 19, 2018, wherein the specific period of 90 days was prescribed in the Act for the purpose of investigation. It was subsequently increased to 365 days. “The mandate of the law now is that the retention shall continue during investigation for a period not exceeding 365 days, as provided under Section 8(3)(a) of the PMLA,” the plea added. The petitioner said that the firm is entitled to the benefit of time-period cap prescribed by Section 8(3)(a) and that the seizure must cease to exist by the operation of law and documents/cash/electronic devices seized by ED from the company premises are liable to be released...

Khan’s lawyer Irfan Ghazi said, “The Mathura jail administration informed us at 11.00 p.m. that Dr. Kafeel Khan is being released around midnight, he walked out of jail.” The Allahabad High Court had quashed his detention under the National Security Act and ordered his immediate release. Khan was in jail since January after he delivered an allegedly provocative speech at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December last year. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, passed the order on a petition filed by Khan’s mother Nuzhat Parveen. In its petition, Pakistan’s foreign ministry requested that the verdict in the high treason case be held back until a new prosecution team is formed, Samaa TV reported. A similar petition was filed by Musharraf separately on Saturday requesting the Lahore High Court to suspend the special court’s reserved verdict which was heard on Monday. The Lahore High Court has asked Musharraf’s lawyer to present two-point statements on Tuesday and assist the court regarding the maintainability of the petition.
