Congress names another candidate for Karnataka bypolls

New Delhi, The Congress on Sunday named P. Nagaraj as its candidate for contesting Yeshvanthapura Assembly constituency in Bengaluru for the upcoming Karnataka by-elections. In a statement, Congress General Secretary Mukul Wasnik said: “The Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi has approved the candidature of Nagaraj as Congress candidate for the ensuing by-election to the Legislative Assembly of Karnataka from Yeshvanthapura constituency.” On Saturday, the party has six more candidates for contesting the 15 Assembly by-elections across Karnataka on December 5. The candidates are G.B. Mangasuli (Athani), B.A. Kage (Kagwad), Lakha Jarkiholi (Gokak), Venkatrao Ghorpade (Vijayanagara), Rizwan Arshad (Shivajinagara) and K.B. Chandrashekar (K.R. Pet). The party had announced candidates for eight other Assembly segments on October 31. They are: Bhimmanna Naik (Yellapur), B.H. Bannikod (Hirekerur), K.B. Koliwad (Rannebennur), M. Karnataka’s legendary saxophonist Gopalnath passes away

Mangaluru, Karnataka’s legendary saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath died at a private hospital here on Friday. He was 69. “Gopalnath died earlier due to cardiac arrest after he was admitted to A.J. Hospital on Thursday when he complained of breathing and back pain,” a state information department official told IANS. Gopalnath is survived by his widow Sarojini, sons Manikanth and Guruprasad and daughter Ambika Mohan. Manikanth is a noted music director. “The last rites of Gopalnath will take place on Saturday after his eldest son Gurupraad flies to the city from Dubai where he works,” the official said, citing a family source. “Hundreds of the musician’s admirers and followers flocked to Gopalnath’s house at Padavinangady to pay their last respects to him and console the bereaved family,” added the official. Born on December 6, 1949 in a Dakshina Kannada village, Gopalnath was son of flute (nagaswara) expert Taniyappa and learnt to play on saxophone from his guru N. New Delhi, Kashmiri woman Arifa Jan, who has spun a success story of her own through revival of the Valley’s Numdah handicraft, on Sunday tweeted on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter handle to emphasise that women should focus on becoming self-reliant and also help other women. Jan, 33, is the third woman achiever after Chennai-based social worker Sneha Mohandoss and bomb-blast survivor Malvika Iyer among the seven who will tweet — minutes after receiving the Nari Shakti Puraskar for 2019 — from Modi’s Twitter handle on Sunday to mark International Women’s Day. Jan was awarded along with 15 other women by President Ram Nath Kovind.
