Amaravati, (Samajweekly) Three lawyers resigned as Andhra Pradesh government pleaders in the state High Court on Thursday and their replacements were also announced.
Penumaka Venkat Rao, Gaddam Satish Babu and Habeen Sheik submitted their resignations.
It was not clear if they resigned on their own or the government asked them to put in their papers.
Their resignations came in the wake of a series of setbacks faced by the Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy state government in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
There has been criticism of the legal team of the government for failing to effectively defend the government’s action on various issues.
Meanwhile, the government appointed Sumathi, Vaddiboyana Sujatha and Kiran Tirumalasetti as the new government pleaders in the high court.
According to a Government Order, they were appointed in consultation with the Advocate General.
Amaravati, (Samajweekly) The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has laid off 6,270 contract employees citing financial crisis due to Covid-19 lockdown, APSRTC Employees’ Union claimed on Friday.
It said that the management through oral orders had asked the contract workers not to report for duties.
The depot managers were directed to utilise the services of only outsourcing staff. There are 52,000 regular employees in the corporation.
The employees’ union has appealed to Transport Minister Perni Nani to reconsider the orders to lay off the contract employees. The union leaders pointed out that the central government has issued clear instructions that there should be no lay-offs in government or private organizations during the lockdown.
They recalled that the state government too had assured in the past that the contract workers will not be removed from service.
As many as 6,270 contract workers are rendering their services in APSRTC head office in Vijayawada, offices of the regional managers, bus depots, workshops and hospitals. Majority of them are sweepers, attenders and grade-4 employees.
“We were demanding that the 7,800 regular vacancies be filled to ease the workload on existing staff. The management took this drastic decision to axe the contract workers,” said employees’ union general secretary P Damodara Rao.
The employees’ union said the contract workers were not even paid salaries for the month of April...
Jaipur, (Samajweekly) Ahead of the Rajasthan Assembly session scheduled to begin on August 14, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday wrote a letter to all MLAs, appealing to them to listen to the people’s voice to save democracy and to stand by truth.
The Chief Minister sought cooperation from them to what he called fulfil the promises of development and prosperity of the desert state.
“Victory and defeat are the part of elections. However, as a leader, you should stand with people. I hope you shall stand with truth. People’s mandate remains over and above everything. You should extend full cooperation in fulfilling promises made to the people. Leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Atalji also faced defeat in elections. However, they never weakened the democratic traditions and constitutional values,” he added.
Gehlot alleged that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, a few of Congress MLAs along with the opposition lawmakers were engaged in a conspiracy to “destabilise our elected government, which is quite unfortunate”.
Gehlot recalled that in 1993-96, attempts were made to topple the state government led by BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by buying and selling MLAs.
“At that time, as Union Minister of State and state Congress President, I met then Governor Baliram Bhagat and Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and opposed the very idea of toppling the elected government, stating that this is against our democratic values. Even the people of this state would never want such a tradition to be established in Rajasthan,” he added.
The Chief Minister maintained that six Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs joined the Congress in the state in the past by following all norms...

On Thursday, the focus was on providing relief to unending streams of migrant workers on the national highways and expressways. The Indian Medical Association helped organise thermal screening and health check ups at the Rainbow Hospital on the Agra-Delhi highway. A team led by Dr Narendra Malhotra screened and provided basic essentials to sustain and support their onward march. “It is such a human tragedy to watch these hapless men, women and children trudging along in such scorching heat.”
District magistrate PN Singh said there had been two deaths and the total number of cases was now 789. Till late Thursday evening there were four new cases. The number of fatalities was 27. A BJP youth leader from Maharashtra Parmesh Rao Maratha, succumbed to Covid-19.
Till date 10,171 samples have been tested. After a special team of senior bureaucrats took over the reins five days ago, the number of cases has shown a remarkable decline, health officials claimed. However, accusations continued to fly regarding the actual numbers and the authenticity of test reports.
But the general feeling here was that there had been a discernible change in the management of government hospitals and the services provided to those in the isolation wards and the quarantine centres, in the past one week, after the elected representatives made a hue and cry.
Many NGOs have demanded nationalisation of the health services and medicare, after the alleged failure of the private sector hospitals and medical practitioners to join the battle against Covid-19. The IMA however does not share this perception. It’s members were providing tele consultations and were actively involved in strategising operational modes, according to the IMA...
