New Delhi, Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who demitted the office on November 17, has vacated his official residence within three days of his retirement. According to court officials, the usual deadline to vacate official residence is one month. The bungalow at 5 Krishna Menon Marg was assigned to Justice Gogoi, and it is learnt from officials that he is first Chief Justice to vacate his official residence so soon after his retirement. Reportedly, Justice J.S. Khehar, former Chief Justice, also vacated his residence a week after his retirement. Justice Gogoi headed the five-judge which decided the Ayodhya title dispute and delivered a landmark judgement. Heavy inflows raise water level in Karnataka’s Almatti dam

Bengaluru,(Samajweekly) Heavy rains in the Krishna river’s catchment area in neighbouring Maharashtra led to heavy inflows into north Karnataka, raising water level in the Almatti dam in Vijayapura district, an official said on Monday. “The Nisarga cyclone and an active southwest monsoon since the first week of this month led to incessant rains in the catchment area of the Krishna river and their inflows raising the water level into the Almatti dam,” an official of the state Water Resources Department told IANS. Though monsoon rains are yet to reach the state’s northern region, the heavy inflows from across the state led to around 16 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water collecting in the dam during the last 5 days, with 5.4 tmcft of it on Sunday. “The heavy inflows during the first month of the monsoon season augurs well as they reached 513.40 metres by Sunday and will enable it to reach its maximum level of 519.60 metres by September when rains recede,” said the official. Named after late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Almatti dam in the lower riparian region is the lifeline for 5-6 districts in the state’s north, as hydro power is generated and its water is used for irrigating agri fields and drinking purpose. As the main reservoir of the upper Krishna irrigation project, the dam stores water to generate 290 MW power for the state electric grid. Water released from the dam flows into the Narayanpur reservoir in the downstream for irrigation in Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi districts in the Deccan region...

AP reports highest single day spike with 7,998 new corona cases

Amaravati,(Samajweekly) Andhra Pradesh reported highest single day spike with 7,998 fresh coronavirus cases taking the total tally to 72,711 on Thursday, health officials said. With this the state also surpassed other southern states in a single day count as Tamil Nadu reported 6,472 cases, Karnataka 5,030 and Kerala 1,078. On Thursday, Andhra Pradesh also conducted 58,052 tests — highest so far — including 25,618 rapid antigen tests. Till date, 14,93,879 tests have been conducted in the state. East Godavari, Guntur, and Anantapur topped the list with 1,391, 1,184, and 1,016 new cases respectively followed by Kurnool, West Godavari, and Visakhapatnam with 904, 748, and 684 cases respectively. Meanwhile, Nellore, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram reported 438, 360, and 277 new cases respectively, Chittoor and Prakasam reported 271 cases each whereas 230 cases were reported from Krishna and 224 from Kadapa. Thursday also saw a marginal dip in the day’s toll figures with 61 deaths reported in comparison to the all time high of 65 reported a day earlier. As per the latest update, deaths have occurred in 12 of the 13 districts in the state. The overall death toll in Andhra Pradesh has now shot up to 884, officials said. 14 deaths were reported from East Godavari followed by Guntur and Kurnool with seven deaths each while Krishna and Srikakulam reported six deaths each and Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram reported five deaths each on Thursday. Chittoor, West Godavari, and Prakasam reported three deaths each while one death each was reported from Kadapa and Anantapur districts...

SBSP chief, 65 others booked for lockdown violation in UP

Prayagraj, (Samajweekly) Former Uttar Pradesh Minister and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar and 65 others have been booked for violating lockdown restrictions here, police said on Friday. Among other leaders booked were Janadhikar Party chief Babu Singh Kushwaha, Apna Dal chief Krishna Patel, Bhartiya Upekkshit Party chief Prem Chandra Prajapati, Bhartiya Manav Samaj Party head Ramdhani Bind, and 60 others. The FIR was lodged at the Patti police station on Thursday. According to IG, Prayagraj range, K.P. Singh, the FIR was lodged against Rajbhar and others under Section 188 (disobedience to order) and 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of IPC and 51 (A) of Disaster Management Act (2005). SHO Patti Narendra Singh in his FIR stated that when police were busy in maintaining lockdown orders near Ramaipur Newada village, they saw that Rajbhar, Kushwaha and other leaders along with their supporters had assembled without having any prior permission from the police. SIT files FIR against UP IPS officer

Lucknow, After initiating a vigilance probe, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe charges of corruption against IPS officers, has registered an FIR against IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma. Director General of SIT, R. P. Singh, said that on the directions of the government, an FIR under the charges of criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and causing disappearance of evidence has been registered against Sharma. “We have formed a team and would be probing into all the allegations against the IPS officer,” he said. He added that the FIR registered by a woman at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow has also been taken into account. It may be recalled that on March 8, a woman claiming to be Sharma’s ‘wife’, had lodged an FIR with Hazratganj police station alleging that the officer had multiple affairs and in order to conceal it, he had framed her in a fraud case and got her arrested on August 10, 2019. However, IPS Sharma had told reporters that the charges were baseless and that the woman was not his wife. Earlier, on January 9, 2020, a three-member SIT comprising IG STF Amitabh Yash, and Jal Nigam Managing Director Vikas Gothalwal was formed on the directions of the Chief Minister to probe the allegations of graft levelled by IPS officer Vaibhav Krishna against five fellow IPS officers, Ajay Pal Sharma, Sudhir Kumar Singh, Ganesh Saha, Rajiv Narain Mishra and Himanshu Kumar...

Ayodhya, (Samajweekly) The Jyotishpeethadheeshwar and Dwarka Shardapithadheeshwar, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati has questioned the “muhurat” of August 5 for laying the foundation stone of the Ram temple. The Shankaracharya said generally good work is initiated in the “Uttam Kaal” section of the Hindu calendar. “The August 5 date falls in the Dakshinayan Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar. August 5 is the second date of Krishna Paksha. In the scriptures, the beginning of the construction of the home/temple in the Bhadrapada month is prohibited,” he said. He said that according to Vishnu Dharma Shastra, the launch in the Bhadrapada month is the cause of destruction. The ‘Daivagna Ballabh Granth’ states that the home, made in Bhadrapada, brings poverty. Vastu Pradeep also says the same. Shankracharya said that according to Vastu Rajaballabh, the beginning of Bhadrapada gives zero fruit. He said that it is also not right to consider it as auspicious due to “Abhijit Muhurta”. “Abhijit is prohibited on Wednesday in the marriage of Muhurta Chintamani. Till the Cancer is in the Sun, the foundation stone can be done only in the month of Shravan and not in Bhadrapada,” said Shankracharya. According to scholars, there is no coincidence of auspicious time in “Chaturmas”. On social media too, many astrologers have objected to this, citing various almanacs. Prof. Ram Narayan Dwivedi of Kashi Vidya Parishad said that marriage between Harishayani Ekadashi to Devotthan Ekadashi is prohibited for performing auspicious work, but worship is not prohibited on religious works...
