Farooq convenes meeting of senior NC leaders

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has called a meeting of senior party leaders on Thursday, days after the J&K government told the court that the party leadership is free and not under any kind of detention. A National Conference statement said that Party President Farooq Abdullah has invited senior party members including Ali Mohammad Sagar, Abdul Rahim Rather, Mohammad Shafi Uri and Nasir Aslam Wani for a meeting at his residence on 20.8.2020 at 5 pm. “National Conference has taken cognisance of the stand taken by the Government in Hon’ble High Court in the Habeas Corpus matters filed by the President and Vice President of the party for securing the liberty of various leaders of the party that have been under an illegal house detention,” a party statement read. “On a perusal of the reply the party has noticed that the government has unequivocally submitted before the High Court that no leader is under detention and that they are free to move subject to necessary security arrangements.” The statement further read that the party is mindful of the present pandemic and accordingly the meeting with various leaders that have been under detention will be done in batches of four members per meeting. “Needless to add that all SOPs shall be strictly followed by all concerned,” the statement read. “The Party is hopeful that the liberty of the members under detention is now absolute and the meeting is held successfully on the appointed day.”..

Hindu body moves SC on 1991 law on religious sites

New Delhi,(Samajweekly) A Hindu organisation has moved the Supreme Court to challenge a provision of a 1991 law that provides for maintaining the “religious character” of holy structures as existed on August 15, 1947, in order to reclaim disputed religious sites through litigation, other than the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. The PIL filed by ‘Vishwa Bhadra Pujari Purohit Mahasangh’ sought court directions to declare Section 4 of the 1991 Act as ultra vires and unconstitutional. The petitioner’s challenge to Section 4 of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, gains significance in the case of Kashi and Mathura where two mosques stand. The law does not allow the conversion of a temple into a mosque and vice versa. The plea contended that the Act has barred the right and remedy against encroachment made on religious property of Hindus by exercise of power by followers of another faith. “The result is that Hindu devotees cannot raise their grievance by instituting any suit in a civil court or invoke the jurisdiction of the High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution against high-handedness and will not be able to restore back the religious character of Hindu endowments, temples, mutts etc from hoodlums if they had encroached upon such property before August 15, 1947 and such illegal and barbarian act will continue in perpetuity,” said the petition. “The Parliament while enacting the Act has excluded the property in dispute at Ayodhya for which Hindu have been fighting…. The top court in November 2019, through a unanimous 5-0 verdict, had granted the disputed land in Ayodhya for the construction of the Ram temple, and ordered that a five-acre plot must be found for construction of a mosque...

Congress to oppose CAB in Parliament

New Delhi, The Congress has decided to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill which is to be introduced on Monday by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, after its parliamentary strategy group meet at Sonia Gandhi’s residence here on Sunday. After the meeting, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said “The bill is a violation of our Constitution’s secular ethos, culture, tradition and civilisation, and we will oppose it.” The Congress has already decided to talk to likeminded parties to oppose the bill but in the lower house the opposition could not do anything as BJP has a majority but in Rajya Sabha Congress may try to stall the bill. The Left parties have also decided to oppose the bill and press for amendments. The party said on Sunday said that “it will move two amendments seeking deletion of reference to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and to religion in the Bill”, as it wants refugees from all neighbouring countries under the ambit of the Bill. The CAB is opposed by the Congress-led opposition but the government has ignored it and decided to go ahead with the Bill. The North East Students Organisation (NESO) has also opposed the bill and had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah whether the government is for its own citizens or for the illegal migrants...

Aizawl, (Samajweekly) The Assam Rifles, which guards the India-Myanmar borders along four northeastern states, would further strengthen its vigil at the frontiers to curb smuggling of drugs and other border crimes, officials said on Thursday. An official of Mizoram Home Department said that Director General of Assam Rifles, Lieutenant General Sukhdeep Sangwan, has held a meeting with Mizoram Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and discussed India-Myanmar border security issue. An Assam Rifles press release also that the para-military chief conveyed his proposal of focusing on the border areas by establishing more posts closer to the Mynamar border for which assistance of the state was sought in acquiring the land. “The Assam Rifles DG assured the Governor, the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary that the force would ensure that Mizoram is free from drugs and illegal trade and that the central force would leave no stone unturned to preserve the Mizo community from the menace of drugs,” the release said. Since July 1, Assam Rifles troopers have seized drugs and other contraband items worth around Rs 27 crore in Mizoram after these were smuggled from the neighbouring Myanmar. The mountainous state of Mizoram has an unfenced international border stretching 404 km with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh. While the BSF guards the Bangladesh border, the border with Myanmar is looked after by the Assam Rifles...

BJP worker allegedly killed in police lock-up in Bengal

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Kolkata, (Samajweekly) A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was allegedly beaten to death inside a police lock-up in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district. The incident took place late on Wednesday night when the police arrested Anup Roy, a resident of Nandan village. He was picked up in connection with a robbery case. “We picked him up in connection with a robbery case that took place on August 28. After interrogating the robbery gang, we came to know about Anup. After we took him to the police station, he suddenly fell ill in the police lock-up. We took him to the nearest hospital where he died,” said North Dinajpur police superintendent Sumit Kumar. The family members of the deceased, however, claimed that the officers at the Raiganj police station had left the body of Roy at the Baroborua area quite late at night. The post-mortem was also conducted in a hurried manner in the night. Reacting angrily to the incident, the district BJP unit called for a protest outside the Raiganj police station on Friday. It was also alleged by the BJP that Roy was beaten to death by the police during interrogation while in custody. Roy was taken to the Raiganj hospital on Wednesday night where he was declared brought dead. The police, however, claimed that the BJP worker had suffered a heart attack in the lock-up and hence was taken to the hospital for necessary treatment. “It was completely illegal. He was picked by the police without any valid basis. No one in his Roy’s family was informed about the arrest. We have protested against the police atrocities and demanded a fresh post-mortem,” said BJP state president Dilip Ghosh...

Congress asks TRS government to prove conspiracy charges

Hyderabad, An affidavit filed by a senior Telangana official in High Court in the case relating to ongoing strike by TSRTC employees has kicked up a row with the Congress party on Sunday demanding evidence to prove the allegation of conspiracy to destablise the government or dismiss the official. Taking serious note of the affidavit filed by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) in-charge Managing Director Sunil Sharma, state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy appealed to Chief Justice to take cognizance of the affidavit, saying it is baseless and full of lies. Sunil Sharma, who is Principal Secretary (transport), claimed that RTC union leaders appear to have acted with the connivance of opposition parties with oblique motive to destabilize the government. The official made the allegation while urging the court to declare the strike illegal. Reddy said the officials should reveal at whose instance the affidavit was filed. “This is an extraordinary situation. It is a serious matter. The chief justice should take cognizance of this and order an inquiry by an independent agency,” he said...
