‘Wrong time to reduce interest rates on small savings’

Chidambaram has slammed the government for reducing the interest rates om small savings and PPF and said it may be “technically correct but it’s wrong time” as the country is amid lockdown due to fear of Covid-19 and people have no way of income. “In times of acute distress and uncertainty about income, people depend on the interest income on their savings.” tweeted Chidambaram. The former Minister demanded roll back, saying, “Government must reconsider immediately and restore old rates until June 30. While reducing the interest rate on PPF and small savings may be technically correct, it is absolutely the wrong time to do so.” The Union Government has reduced the interest rates on small savings schemes by 70 to 140 basis points for the year 2020 during April-June quarter. Public provident fund interest rates in the quarter have been brought down by 80 bps to 7.1 per cent and for KVP (Kisan Vikas Patra) the rate has been slashed by 70 bps to 6.9 percent and after reduction of 0.8 percent, the girl child-focussed Sukanya Samriddhi scheme now stands at the interest rate of 7.6 per cent...

MP govt retracts on promise to hold student polls

Bhopal, The Kamal Nath government has gone back on its promise to hold students union elections in the government and private colleges of Madhya Pradesh this year. The state was expected to hold the students elections after a gap of over 15 years. The earlier plan was to hold the elections in September or October. On September 1 the state’s Higher Education Minister Jitu Patwari had told the media that the state government was in favour of students directly electing their representatives and around 1,300 colleges across the state would witness election process. On Sunday came the announcement that the elections cannot be held this year. However, Patwari said the government will certainly hold the elections next year. The Congress manifesto for the assembly elections – ‘Vachan Patra’ (promissory note) as it is known had said students’ union elections would be will be held in colleges if Congress came to power. The promise was repeated several times during the one year the government has been in place. Congress-backed student organisation NSUI and BJP-backed ABVP have been preparing for elections in colleges. Both the unions have expressed disappointment over the government’s decision...

K’taka distributes 15 lakh food packets to migrant labourers

Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With the help of Civil Defene Corps (CDC), the Karnataka government distributed a whopping 15 lakh food packets to thousands of migrant labourers, stranded across the state due to sudden lockdown since March 25, an official said on Tuesday. “As a voluntary organisation of the state home department, the CDC, in coordination with the state Home Guards and Akshaya Patra of Isckon, has distributed 15 lakh food packets to hundreds of migrant labourers in relief camps at Bengaluru and other cities/towns since March 30, as they are stranded with no trains/buses,” a home department official told IANS. When the 21-day lockdown began on March 25, the CDC swung into action and reached out to the migrant labourers, who were without work, food and shelter, as the lockdown suspended every activity and they could not go back to their native places in the absence of trains and buses across the country. “As our mission is to protect life and property of the people in the hour of crisis or in the event of natural calamity or external aggression, about 2,500 corps volunteered to take care of the migrant labourers in make-shift shelters, providing them with basic amenities and food packets,” CDC Commanding Officer P.R.S Chetan said in a statement here. The CDC also distributed 1.3 lakh grocery kits to the needy through the state government and Akshaya Patra from April 4-20. “Besides manning a social media room 24×7 with a helpline for enquiries and information, our personnel also stitched and distributed cotton masks and created awareness for social distancing among the people to contain the coronavirus spread,” said the official...

Jaipur, (Samajweekly) After rejecting the state government’s proposal to call a special assembly session in Rajasthan thrice,Governor Kalraj Mishra on Wednesday finally approved the revised proposal sent by the state government requesting to convene special assembly session on August 14 after holding a cabinet meeting in the evening. The Governor, in his order, has directed that all measures should be adopted during the conduct of the assembly session, as per the guidelines issued to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Earlier, in morning, Mishra rejected the revised proposal of the Ashok Gehlot government for the third time while Gehlot, soon after the rejection of the proposal, met him for the fourth time to end the deadlock between the two. Gehlot on Wednesday morning called the rejection a ‘love letter’. Officials said that the Governor raised objections over the rising cases of COVID-19 in Rajasthan and again inquired how social distancing could be maintained in the assembly during the special session. Gehlot rushed to meet Mishra soon after he received the information on the return of the proposal.
