Bengal accuses NICED of giving defective corona test kits

Kolkata, (Samajweekly) The West Bengal government has accused the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) of supplying ‘apparently defective’ test kits resulting in delays in detecting the coronavirus infection, and urged the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)to look into the issue. The NICED is an associate of the Central government’s apex body for biomedical research ICMR. NICED also carries out testing of samples for coronavirus at its Regional Virus Research Diagnostic Lab here. In a series of tweets, the state health department said the kits have led to a high number of repeat or confirmatory tests causing ‘delays’ and other attendant problems not only in Bengal, but also in other states. “The testing kits supplied by the ICMR-NICED about two weeks ago have started to throw up a large number of ‘inconclusive’ results, necessitating a repeat/’confirmatory’ test run, thereby causing a delay in the generation of the final test report,” the state health department posted on its Twitter handle. In another tweet, the department said there was no problem earlier when the testing kits were being received directly from National Institute of Virology, Pune. 17,615 Indians tested positive for Covid-19: ICMR

New Delhi, (Samajweekly)The number of total Covid positive cases in India as risen up to 17,615 as per latest data released by the ICMR. The release said “Today, on 19 April 2020, till 9 pm, 27,824 samples have been reported. Of these, 1,135 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.” As per ICMR a “total of 4,01,586 samples from 3,83,985 individuals have been tested as on 19 April 2020, till 9 PM. 17,615 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known.” Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday asserted that doubling rate of Covid-19 cases has increased from three days before imposition of lockdown in March to 9.7 days now. “The rate of growth of new cases has been steadying for a while. As per the data received today by 8 a.m., over the past seven days, the doubling rate is 7.2 days, for the past 14 days it is 6.2, and over past 3 days it stands at 9.7. Before the lockdown, India’s doubling rate was about 3 days,” Harsh Vardhan said. Raj to buy Cobas-8800 machine to speed up Covid-19 testing

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Jaipur, (Samajweekly) As the number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Jaipur and Jodhpur, the state government has ordered the purchase of Cobas-8800 machine to speed up testing in these two cities, state Medical and Health Minister Raghu Sharma said on Thursday. As on Thursday, Jaipur had 740 Covid-19 cases, while the tally reached 310 in Jodhpur. The Health Minister said that the Cobas-8800 machine is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) and shall ensure 3,000 additional tests as compared to the present number of tests been done in Jaipur and Jodhpur districts. Sharma said the machine would allow both RNA extraction and RT-PCR tests to be performed simultaneously. It will be able to test both automatically and manually, he said, adding that Rajasthan is moving ahead to accomplish the target set by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to conduct 10,000 tests per day. Sharma further said that testing is also being expedited in the Corona affected districts and hence, RT-PCR machines have been delivered in Bharatpur, Dungarpur, Pali and Barmer. Besides this, additional RT-PCR machines have been sent to Udaipur and Ajmer to increase the testing capacity. Testing will also be allowed by the ICMR in Bhilwara. Touching 9K cases a day, COVID tally crosses 2L in India

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) India witnessed closed to 9,000 new cases on Wednesday as the total case count of coronavirus mounted to 2,07,615, the Health Ministry data revealed. With 8,909 new cases and 217 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, India is now poised at the seventh place on the world tally table with just 25,000 cases behind Italy. Of the total cases 1,01,497 are active and 1,00,303 have been cured and discharged while 5,815 have died from the disease. The recovery rate in the country stood at 48.31 per cent while the fatality rate docked at 2.8 per cent. Maharashtra reported a total of 72,300 cases so far — almost 50,000 more than Tamil Nadu with 24,586 and Delhi 22,132. Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of casualties — 2,465, followed by Gujarat (1,092), Delhi (556) and Madhya Pradesh (364). States that have reported more than 5,000 cases are Madhya Pradesh (8,420), Rajasthan (9,373), Uttar Pradesh (8,361) and West Bengal (6,168). The Health Ministry on Tuesday said that India is far from COVID peak. ICMR official Nivedita Gupta, addressing a press conference, said: “We are very far away from the peak. Our preventive measures to curb the disease are very effective and we are better positioned in comparison with other countries. You will get to see the data in a week.”..

The apex medical research body’s invite was uploaded on the ICMR website on Sunday. The project is named “Multi-center, Phase II, Open Label, Randomized Controlled Study of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in COVID-19”. The Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) is an experimental procedure for critically ill COVID-19 patients which, the ICMR said, it does not recommend as a treatment option outside of clinical trials. “Institutions interested to collaborate with ICMR on undertaking this trial intervention may express their interest by providing the details through the following link: https://forms.gle/7AaW528DMQbNZsUr9,” said the ICMR on its website, adding that hospitals and institutions planning to provide this modality of treatment should do so in a clinical trial with protocols which are cleared by the Institutional Ethics Committee.
