Trinamool MLAs protest against Governor in Assembly

Kolkata, The stand-offs between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress continued to echo in the Assembly as the TMC legislators held protests in the premises decrying Raj Bhavan’s delay in clearing vital legislations. While the TMC lawmakers accused Dhankhar of holding back crucial Bills, the Governor dismissed the protests as ‘dirty politics’. The slogan-shouting MLAs gathered near the B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly premises holding placards denouncing the Governor for stalling passage of key legislations, particularly the West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019. They said important Bills could not be tabled in the House with Dhankhar refusing to give the nod. Meanwhile, the Governor sent a communication to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee under Article 338 and 338A of the Constitution arguing that the field (of the Bill) has been occupied by the National Commission for Scheduled Caste and National Commission for Schedule Tribe. In the six-page communication, Dhankhar said he always accorded the highest priority to legislative work, but the officials were yet to respond to certain questions he had raised about the Bill...

Canada’s Jagmeet Singh calls MP racist in Parliament

Ottawa, (Samajweekly) Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), was temporarily expelled from the House of Commons or the lower chamber of the bicameral Parliament for calling an MP racist and for refusing to apologize and withdraw his comments. On Wednesday, Speaker Anthony Rota kicked Singh, a turbaned Sikh who is the first visible minority to lead a major national Canadian political party, out for the rest of the day after he called Bloc Quebecois Alain Therrien racist for refusing to support an NDP motion dealing with systemic racism in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), CBC News reported. Singh tried to get all parties in the House of Commons to agree to a motion recognizing the existence of systemic racism in the RCMP. The motion points out that “several Indigenous people have died at the hands of the RCMP in recent months”. The motion also asked MPs to support a review of the RCMP’s budget, to demand that it releases all of its use-of-force reports and to call for a review of the RCMP’s tactics for dealing with the public. Therrien was the only MP in the House who refused to support the motion prompting Singh to call him a racist. Following his remark, Deputy Speaker Carol Hughes said that she would review the record because she did not hear Singh when he stood up and said: “It’s true, I called him a racist and I believe that’s so.” Singh was asked by Hughes to apologize, which he refused. The matter was referred to Speaker Rota, who returned to the House and ordered Singh to leave the Commons for the remainder of the day...

Effectively,Ajit Pawar is no longer the leader of NCP Legislature Party, and hence, any of his actions now would be of no consequence,” said a constitutional law expert requesting anonymity. The Pro-Tem Speaker – usually the senior-most elected legislator – to be appointed and sworn-in by Governor B.S. Koshyari, will conduct the oath-taking ceremony of all the 287 MLAs – excluding himself – since he has already been sworn-in. “This will pave the way for the first major political and constitutional trial on the floor of the Assembly – the election of Speaker for the ruling party. In this case, the BJP and Ajit Pawar’s claimed support of NCP MLAs must get their Speaker elected. Otherwise, the government will automatically collapse,” the expert said...

New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday pulled up senior officials of the three municipal corporations in Delhi for skipping a crucial Parliamentary standing committee meeting that had been scheduled on November 15 to discuss the rising air pollution levels in the national capital. Sources said Birla summoned senior officials of the three corporations to his chamber where he reprimanded them for their absence due to which the meeting had to be cancelled. Commissioner of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Varsha Joshi, had told IANS that she could not attend the meeting as she was in Lucknow attending a meeting on urban mobility scheduled months in advance. “The Urban Mobility Conference is organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which was planned months in advance,” Joshi had said.
