Cyclone ‘Nisarga’: Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. “Nisarga” currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa’s capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, ‘Nisarga’ will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. “The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone,” Vineet Kumar said...

Monsoon enters Karnataka with widespread rain

Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) The much awaited Southwest Monsoon entered Karnataka with widespread rain in coastal and central regions of the southern state, an official said on Friday. Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over coastal areas and at a few places over the interior parts over the next 24-48 hours. “The southwest monsoon entered the state on Thursday as predicted from Kerala and the Arabian Sea, with moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal districts and central or Malnad region of the state,” Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre Director Srinivas Reddy told IANS here. Though the monsoon has set in on time in the state, Reddy said its progress was likely to be slow in the next three days, as cyclone Nisarga induced high-speed winds took away rain-bearing clouds from the southern peninsula. According to the regional meteorological office, Karwar in Uttar Kannada district received a whopping 15cm rainfall on Thursday, followed by 11cm each at Kundapur in Udupi district and Shivamogga in Malnad region. Kadra and Gersoppa in Uttara Kannada and Kottigehara in Chikkamagaluru district had 10cm rainfall, followed by 8cm at Virajpet in Kodagu district and 7cm each at Shirali and Gokarana in Uttara Kannda. Isolated to scattered rainfall also occurred in many places across the north and south interior regions of the state. “The monsoon will advance in the state to south and north interior areas after June 8 as there is lull in its movement due to lack of rain-bearing clouds and winds to carry them,” said Reddy...

‘Cyclone Nisarga’: Shah holds meet with Guj, Maha CMs

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a meeting, via video conference, with Gujrat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administrator Praful Patel over cyclone Nisarga. He assured all Central help in view of the impending cyclone and asked the states to chalk out in details the requirements and resources needed to deal with the situation. Earlier, the Home Minister held a meeting to take stock of the situation and preparedness to deal with Cyclone ‘Nisarga’ brewing in the Arabian Sea. Shah held the review meeting with senior officials of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai was also present in the meeting. Days after the country’s eastern coast was battered by Amphan, a fresh cyclone has begun brewing over the Arabian Sea on the western coast and is expected to hit some parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The IMD on Monday sounded a ‘Yellow’ warning for north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coast. Cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and other neighbouring states, the MD cautioned on Monday. It said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigad district and Daman on June 3. The IMD has informed that the well marked low pressure area over southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea & Lakshadweep area concentrated into a depression and it is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 12 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic Storm over East central Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours...
