Hong Kong lifts cruise ship quarantine

Hong Kong, Hong Kong authorities have allowed over 3,600 passengers that were forced into quarantine for five days on the World Dream cruise ship over coronavirus fears, to disembark. Half of the travellers have passed “numerous medical tests” and temperature controls, and all the tests carried out on the ship’s 1,814 crew members have come back negative for coronavirus, Efe news reported citing the Hong Kong Health Department as saying on Sunday. “As all quarantine measures carried out by the Department of Health have been completed, all passengers and crew members can leave the cruise,” Leung Yiu-hong, chief port health officer at the Centre for Health Protection, said at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Sunday. B’desh COVID-19 cases top 100,000 with over 1,300 deaths

Dhaka, (Samajweekly) The number of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh crossed the 100,000 mark on Thursday, authorities said, as the densely populated South Asian country struggles to contain the pandemic. The country recorded 3,803 new cases in the past 24 hours from Wednesday morning, taking the total number of cases to 102,292, reports Efe news. With the new cases, Bangladesh overtook Canada and is now 17th on the list of most-affected nations, according to the global coronavirus data released by John Hopkins University. The COVID-19 death toll reached 1,343, with the deaths of 38 people in the past 24 hours, Nasima Sultana, additional director general of health services, said. Victims said the number of the originally infected people could be much higher than the official data as many people are refusing to get tested because of long sample collection queues and other hassles. According to the Health Emergency Operations control room, the country has only 12,034 beds and 339 ICU beds available in government and private hospitals for COVID-19 patients. Most of these beds are occupied already, said health officials, adding they were taking different steps to help people taking treatment from home. Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) said there are no adequate protections for doctors in many hospitals, resulting in several dozen deaths and infection of over 1,000 physicians. “The infection rate among Bangladeshi doctor is possibly highest in the world,” said BMA secretary Ehteshamul Huq Choudhury...

Dhaka, (Samajweekly) Strict restrictions will remain on public transports and inter-district travels across Bangladesh until May 30 during the extended shutdown, the government has said. Citizens have been asked to remain indoors, according to the notice issued on Thursday. People will be barred from leaving homes, except for emergency purposes, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., reports bdnews24. On Thursday, the country confirmed 14 new fatalities from the coronavirus infection, raising the body count to 283. The caseload soared to 18,863 after 1,041 people tested positive for COVID-19. State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain had earlier said: “The government would put strict curbs on travels for seven days before and after the Eid festival.” The travel restrictions will begin four days before Eid and continue for two days after the festival. No vehicles, including cars, will be allowed on the roads during the period. “Road transport, water transport, rail communication and domestic flights will remain closed. Only vehicles of emergency services will be allowed to run,” the government said in Thursday’s notice. Existing restrictions on prayers at mosques will be effective for Eid congregations too, reports bdnews24. “Muslim devotees will have to avoid large congregations on open grounds.
