There was a major traffic jam at the border post of the two states in Johariya village on Shivpuri-Jhansi highway when police stopped people from crossing the borders into Madhya Pradesh. WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) does not possess the state-wise or district-wise data on the number of migrant workers under distress due to the three phases of lockdowns in the country, an RTI activist said on Wednesday. However, the CLC had directed its regional heads in 20 centres around the country to enumerate every migrant worker stranded due to the lockdown within three days during the second week of April, said RTI activist Venkatesh Nayak. “On April 21, I submitted an online RTI application to the CLC seeking the data of migrants stranded and placed in various temporary shelters/relief camps or other places,” Nayak said. On May 5, after the lockdown 3.0 was implemented, Nayak got an automated email stating that his RTI application had been disposed of with the reply: “As per the stat section is concerned, no such details are available based on the requisite information.” “There was no indication whether my RTI application would be transferred to any other section or public authority, or if any effort would be made to collate the information from the enumeration exercise and make it publicly available,” said Nayak. “So the CLC CPIO’s cryptic one-lin reply raises serious doubts about the availability of data about migrant workers despite the launching of the enumeration exercise,” said Nayak. He pointed out that hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, who had migrated from their home states to other cities, towns or villages, suddenly found themselves jobless and penniless as the economy ground to a halt due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown...

Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced Rs 4 lakh financial assistance to the family of a worker from the state who was shot dead by militants on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Sethi Kumar Sagar, who worked as a labourer at brick kiln, was walking along a railway track in the Kakapora area when he was shot dead by militants. Kashmir police said that the “area has been cordoned and searches are going on to track down the killers”. The killing has evoked a sharp criticism in Chhattisgarh and state’s ruling Congress as well as the BJP strongly condemned the incident. Baghel, who returned to Chhattisgarh on Wednesday evening after a three-day hectic election campaigning tour for the party in Maharashtra ahead of the October 21 Assembly elections, told reporters at Raipur airport that he had instructed the state police chief to coordinate with his counterpart in Jammu and Kashmir on the issue...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Lucknow, (Samajweekly) Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the biggest contributor to employment generation in the country. The state has ensured employment to more than 57 lakh unskilled workers who are now engaged in various projects under MGNREGS. With 57.2 lakh people involved in one or the other project, Uttar Pradesh has trumped Rajasthan to reach the first position, by contributing 18 per cent of the total employment in the country under the scheme. Rajasthan ranks second by providing 17 per cent employment and giving jobs to 53.45 lakh workers. Andhra Pradesh has contributed 12 per cent with 36.58 lakh workers while West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh have employed eight per cent workers. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi said, “Earlier Rajasthan was ahead of us but on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh has occupied the first place. Under directions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has created 8.08 crore man-days. He has asked the state to create another 10 lakh man-days and we are working towards that goal.” The creation of man-days has been calculated from April 21, the date from which the government started distribution of job cards under the MGNREGS. With over 32 lakh migrants and their families having returned to the state during lockdown, the government is looking forward to generating sufficient employment to retain the workforce in the state. Other than MGNREGS schemes, other avenues that the government is considering for employment generation include work in MSMEs, construction and industrial sectors. The Yogi Adityanath government has signed an MoU with various industry bodies for creation of 11 lakh jobs within a year...

Panaji, (Samajweekly) Chinese products should be boycotted and banned in Goa, state BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade said on Tuesday, urging people to buy and endorse India-made products only to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. Addressing a press conference here at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state headquarters, Tanavade also said, that China was indulging in ‘masti’, but the Prime Minister has handled the situation adequately. When asked if the BJP-led government in Goa should take cue and also wean off dependence on foreign, especially Chinese made articles and products, Tanavade said: “Such things cannot be done overnight, but we will succeed in the long run”. The state BJP chief also said that party workers and officials had been directed henceforth to address the media wearing India-made ‘swadeshi’ clothes only. Accusing China of unnecessary provocation, Tanavade said, that anger against India’s eastern neighbour had even irked young children in the country. “Even children in India are angry with China over Covid. A father recently told me that his son had requested him not to buy Chinese products henceforth”, he added...
