Panaji, The main opposition Congress in Goa on Wednesday condemned Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar’s threat to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against over 200 lifeguards who are on strike demanding prompt payment of wages and better work conditions. A day after Ajgaonkar, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, threatened to invoke ESMA against the striking lifeguards, state Congress spokesperson Swati Kerkar reiterated the party’s demand to sack the Tourism Minister for his shoddy handling of beach safety and maintenance issues, including the strike by lifeguards. “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should immediately remove Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar from the Cabinet for his arrogant and insensitive remark against the lifeguards who are only protesting against delay in payment of salaries and want humane work conditions,” Kerkar said. Over 200 of the 600-strong force of lifeguards employed by a private beach maintenance and safety contractor Drishti Marine, have been on strike since last week, triggering a political war of words between the Congress and the BJP. While the Chief Minister has dismissed the strike as an “internal matter” between Drishti Marine and the lifeguards, the opposition has alleged the government was openly backing the private contractor over “very real” issues raised by the striking lifeguards. Earlier this week, Sawant also extended the beach safety contract with the private beach safety company for six more months...

Gargi students to meet DCW chief on Friday afternoon

New Delhi, A delegation of students of Delhi University’s all-girls Gargi College will meet Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal here on Friday regarding an ongoing probe into sexual harassment by a mob of outsiders on February 6. “The meeting is scheduled around 2 pm, wherein students will seek to know the status of the probe,” Rahul Tahilayani, Personal Secretary to Maliwal, told IANS. A number of students of Gargi College in south Delhi had alleged manhandling and sexual harassment by outsiders who had gatecrashed the campus during the annual cultural fest ‘Reverie’. A third-year college student said the aggrieved students were ready to file an RTI application to seek relevant information from authorities. A fact-finding committee that recorded and examined testimonies of more than 600 students so far has found that the Internal Complaints Committee in the college was allegedly grossly biased and compromised. So far, the Delhi Police has arrested 17 persons, of which 10 have been granted bail by Delhi’s Saket court...

DCW chief summons top cop over minor’s sexual assault

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal on Thursday visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and met the 12-year-old girl, who was sexually assaulted earlier this week and her family. Maliwal assured the family that “the Commission would provide all possible help” to them. Maliwal has also issued summons to the DCP in-charge questioning why no arrest has been made in this case so far. Speaking to reporters after her visit, Maliwal said, “The victim was brutally assaulted to the extent that every body part suffered injuries. Despite such a brutal crime, no arrest has been made.” “I am issuing summons to the DCP in-charge to find out why an arrest has not been made so far and what kind of investigation are they conducting,” she said. Maliwal further assured all possible assistance to the victim and her family. The minor was sexually assaulted and brutally attacked in Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar West area on Tuesday evening. The girl has also sustained brutal wounds and is battling for life at AIIMS. The Delhi police have formed several teams to arrest the accused. According to police the incident took place at her house on Tuesday evening when she was alone. She was found critically injured and bleeding profusely. The victim was first taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in a blood-soaked condition where doctors referred her to AIIMS after first aid. Police said that she was found bleeding at home and there were injury marks inflicted by a sharp weapon on the back of her head and body. A case has been registered against unknown accused under several sections including attempt to murder and the POCSO Act and an investigation is underway...

Her letter comes in the wake of the recent brutal gangrape and murder of a veterinarian in Hyderabad. Also mentioned in her letter is the heart-wrenching case of a six-year-old girl from Rajasthan who had been raped and strangled to death with her school belt last week. Maliwal is demanding incorporation of six measures to empower the existing law and deter such heinous crimes, including an increase in the number of courts, police personnel, and swift trial and sentencing. Inviting the women MPs to join her in her protest at Raj Ghat, Maliwal declared that she will continue fasting until these six demands are met. She also urged them to raise the issue inside the Parliament until women’s safety is ensured...
