New Delhi, (Samajweekly) After the government has announced new Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for Kharif crops, Congress on Tuesday said that all hopes of farmers were dashed as they have been facing unprecedented crisis due to the lockdown, locust attack and cyclone. Congress leader Ahmed Patel said, “If this is going to be the government’s attitude towards farmers, their promise to double farm income by 2022 will end up becoming another ‘jumla’.” The Congress leader said that unfortunately, all hopes of farmers expecting much needed respite were dashed by the Centre. “Forget about profit, this so-called raise in Kharif MSPs won’t even cover their losses and debts”, he added The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday approved the increase in the MSPs for all mandated Kharif crops for marketing season 2020-21. Government has increased the MSPs of Kharif crops for marketing season 2020-21, to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce. The highest increase in MSPs is proposed for nigerseed (Rs 755 per quintal) followed by sesamum (Rs 370 per quintal), urad (Rs 300 per quintal) and cotton (long staple) (Rs 275 per quintal)...

New Delhi,(Samajweekly) Indicating an end to the rebellion in the Congress’ Rajasthan unit, a meeting took place between Sachin Pilot and his loyalists and the three-member panel formed by interim party chief Sonia Gandhi to look into their grievances, at the war room in the Congress headquarters here on Monday evening. The three-member panel comprises senior party leaders Ahmed Patel, Priyanka Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal. Following the meeting, Pilot stressed that his fight was ideological and not personal. “Since the past few days, some MLAs were in Delhi, there were some issues of the state which we wanted to highlight and I have done that by raising the issues clearly. I have been saying since the beginning that all these things were based on principles. I always thought these things are essential to be raised in the party’s interest,” he told mediapersons. Pilot also said that he believed that all these issues will be resolved after Sonia Gandhi heard all their concerns and the governance issues that they had raised. He also welcomed the formation of the three-member committee. “I heard a lot of things. I was surprised by a few things that were said. I think we should always maintain restraint and humility. Jaipur, (Samajweekly) Rajasthan’s former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot visited Tonk, his assembly constituency, on Wednesday to a spirited welcome by people at various places, and said this had left him “humbled”. Addressing a public hearing in Tonk, Pilot said: “I am not a part of the (Ashok Gehlot) government any more. Neither am I a Deputy Chief Minister nor am I the state (Congress) President. Despite this, I am humbled to see the enthusiasm of people. We shall work to resolve all issues soon as our government has three more years to work. I am grateful to people for a rousing welcome.” After the programme, Pilot went to the district Collectorate where he attended a meeting with district officials and people’s representatives. He gave a patient hearing to people’s problems and also collected officials’ feedback on different issues, including the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking to the media in Jaipur before leaving for Tonk by road, he thanked interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi for taking quick action after hearing his grievances, and said that everything now will be resolved by the three-member committee. “Now, a three-member committee has been formed which will discuss and decide on ways to work in coordination for government and organisation. Army starts investigation in Shopian encounter case

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Army has started investigation in the July 18 encounter in South Kashmir’s Shopian in which three suspected militants were killed. The three killed have been reportedly identified as missing labourers from Rajouri in Jammu on the basis of photographs released by the families. In a statement army said, “We have noted social media inputs linked to the operation at Shopian on 18 Jul 2020. The three terrorists killed during the operation have not been identified and the bodies were buried based on established protocols. Army is investigating the matter.” Meanwhile the incident has drawn sharp response from Kashmir based politicians. Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari Monday sought an impartial and time bound probe to unearth the mystery behind the disappearance of three labourers of Rajouri district. In a statement issued Bukhari urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to order a high level probe into the disappearance of three labourers–Imtiaz Ahmed, son of Sagar Hussain, Ibrar Ahmed, son of Bagha Khan and Ibrar Ahmed son of Mohammad Yousuf whose whereabouts are unknown since July 17. “The Lt. Governor led government in J&K is expected to order and pursue a serious, impartial and transparent investigation that leaves no stone unturned in finding out what happened to these three poor labourers who have lost contact with their families since July 17. The truth behind their missing must be unearthed as quickly as possible,” he remarked...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Islamabad, (Samajweekly) The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed an immediate ban on at least five online dating and live streaming applications, citing “immoral and indecent content” being promoted through their use in the country. The PTA stated in a statement that it has blocked Tinder, Tagged, Skout, Grindr and SayHi apps, “keeping in view the negative effects of immoral/indecent content streaming through the above applications”. “PTA issued notices to the management of the above mentioned platforms for the purpose of removing daring services and to moderate live streaming content in accordance with the local laws of Pakistan,” read PTA press release. “Since the platform did not respond to the notices within the stipulated time period, the authority issued orders for blocking the said applications,” it added. The PTA has maintained that it may reconsider blocking the said applications provided their company managements assure adherence to the local laws of moderating what it called ‘immoral content’ through meaningful engagements. The decision has not gone down well with the digital rights groups, which have slammed the PTA for forcibly imposing their self-assessed moralities and policies on the adults of the country. “If adults choose to be on an app, it is not for the state to dictate whether they should use it or not,” said Shahzad Ahmed, director of a digital rights group. Terming PTA’s decision as “moral policing”, Ahmed said the ban is “completely ridiculous” as people would find ways to bypass the ban...
