AASU, AJYCP form panel as they look to make political entry

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) As the state gears up for the Assembly elections next year, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Wednesday set up a committee of eminent citizens to suggest the future course of action for the two organisations. Addressing a joint media conference here, AASU and AJYCP leaders announced an 18-member “Assam Advisory Committee” to formulate clear-cut policy on academic, social, economic and political in order to defend the future of the indigenous people and genuine citizens of the state. The AASU and AJYCP’s joint announcement comes a week after the influential student body (AASU), which was a part of the Central government’s high-level committee on Clause 6 of Assam Accord, released the “confidential” report, claiming that the people has the right to know the contents after more than five months of submitting it officially. The student bodies claimed that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had lost its regional characteristics and original mandate despite the fact that the organisation (AGP) was born out of the six-year-long Assam Agitation. “Sacrificing Assam’s interest, the AGP has joined hands with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). To serve the indigenous people of the state, AASU and AJYCP approached some prominent citizens of Assam and they agreed to become a part of the committee,” AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath told the reporters. The AASU and AJYCP formed committee members include eminent litterateur and former Rajya Sabha member Nagen Saikia, Padma Shree awardee and writer-journalist Arup Kumar Dutta, former Meghalaya governor and BSF Director General Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, National Award-winning filmmaker Jahnu Barua, environmentalist and former Gauhati University professor Krishnagopal Bhattacharya and former professor of Handique Girls’ College Basanta Deka...

Agartala, Though there have been no fresh incidents, prohibitory orders have been promulgated in three sub-divisions in northern Tripura as precautionary measures in the wake of amendment to the Citizenship Act. “The Dhalai district administration as precautionary measures has promulgated the prohibitory orders 144 CrPc in three sub-divisions — Longtharai Valley, Ambassa and Gandachara. Some troopers of the Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force (BSF) along with the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) are patrolling these three tribal-dominated areas,” a police official said. Peace meetings were being organised in each of the 23 sub-divisions and all 58 blocks to maintain harmony in the state, where tribals constituted one third of the four million populations, he said. Centre withdraws 12,000 paramilitary force personnel from J&K

New Delhi/Srinagar, (Samajweekly) A year after additional security personnel were deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, the Central government on Wednesday withdrew around 12,000 troopers of various paramilitary forces, indicating a significant improvement in the law and order situation of the Union Territory. Ahead of the nullification of the Constitution’s Articles 370 and 35A on August 5 last year, the government had made additional deployments of paramilitary forces to Jammu and Kashmir, anticipating Pakistan-sponsored terror attacks and separatist violence. The intelligence inputs about possible terror attacks had followed after the Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide bombing in February in Pulwama, in which 40 paramilitary personnel were killed. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, in its order on Wednesday, said that the government had reviewed the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) which includes the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Jammu & Kashmir. After the review, the government decided to withdraw 100 companies – 40 companies of the CRPF and 20 companies each of the BSF, the SSB and the CISF with immediate effect. All the companies have been asked to revert to their respective locations. A copy of the order was sent to the Union Territory government, headed by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and all the CAPFs based in J&K. The law and order related incidents in Kashmir Valley have dropped dramatically in the last one year. As per the data, civilian casualties due to stone-pelting incidents and the subsequent clashes with security forces, came down by 87.5 per cent in 2019 (January to July) when compared to the corresponding period in 2018. The killings in stone-pelting incidents in the non-winter nine month period last year came down by 62 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2018...
