Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the PTI’s core committee meeting on Sunday and reiterated the party’s demand that Election Commission hear cases of all three major political parties – PTI, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), simultaneously and refrain from singling out PTI. “The ECP should follow rules, give equal opportunities to all the parties and conduct across-the-board accountability,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters after the core committee’s meeting. Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. Tehran, (Samajweekly) Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the recent US decision to end the sanctions waivers under the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. The US move to end the remaining sanctions waivers under the landmark deal is a “violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231” which endorses the deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...
