Aus state extends Covid-19 lockdown for 2 more weeks

Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. From early August, Victoria’s capital Melbourne was placed under stage four restrictions including a nightly curfew, with residents only permitted to leave their homes for work and school, exercise, medical reasons or to shop for essentials. Chief Labour Comm has no data on migrant workers: RTI activist

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) does not possess the state-wise or district-wise data on the number of migrant workers under distress due to the three phases of lockdowns in the country, an RTI activist said on Wednesday. However, the CLC had directed its regional heads in 20 centres around the country to enumerate every migrant worker stranded due to the lockdown within three days during the second week of April, said RTI activist Venkatesh Nayak. “On April 21, I submitted an online RTI application to the CLC seeking the data of migrants stranded and placed in various temporary shelters/relief camps or other places,” Nayak said. On May 5, after the lockdown 3.0 was implemented, Nayak got an automated email stating that his RTI application had been disposed of with the reply: “As per the stat section is concerned, no such details are available based on the requisite information.” “There was no indication whether my RTI application would be transferred to any other section or public authority, or if any effort would be made to collate the information from the enumeration exercise and make it publicly available,” said Nayak. “So the CLC CPIO’s cryptic one-lin reply raises serious doubts about the availability of data about migrant workers despite the launching of the enumeration exercise,” said Nayak. He pointed out that hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, who had migrated from their home states to other cities, towns or villages, suddenly found themselves jobless and penniless as the economy ground to a halt due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown...

India’s MiG 29 to fly with Eurofighter Typhoon in Oman

New Delhi, The MiG 29 fighter aircraft of Indian Air Force (IAF) will be flying alongside the Eurofighter Typhoon and F-16 in India’s bilateral air exercise with Oman which kicked off on Thursday. According to the IAF, this is the first occasion that the MiG 29 will participate in an international air exercise outside India. The drill, Exercise Eastern Bridge V, is being held at the Air Force Base Masirah in Oman from October 17-26. The Royal Air Force Oman will fly its UK-made advanced trainer aircraft Hawk too during the 10-day air exercise. India’s military transport aircraft C-17 Globemaster will also participate in the air exercise. “IAF’s Mig-29 Upgrade (UPG) will participate in the exercise along with C-17 Globemaster, which is providing the requisite transport support for induction/de-induction,” tweeted the IAF. It is absolutely difficult to be like him if we were living in today’s poisonous atmosphere. There were agreement between Nehru and Liaqat Ali Khan related to treatment to minorities in our respective countries. Pakistan failed in it miserably as its secular leadership passed away and the country was under the control of the military after the first decade only. The division of Pakistan and creation of a new state like Bangladesh happened that religion alone can not unite people and nationalities. The situation was so bad in Pakistan that one of the main architect of Pakistan constitution, Jogendra Nath Mandal had to resign and leave Pakistan accusing the then leadership of allowing the violence against minorities. Though Bangladesh became a reality on linguistic nationalism yet in the last two decade Jamat-e-Islami and other tehreeks there have radicalised people. Bangladesh became a hot bed against secular and minorities. Pakistan has similar conditions though the government in both the countries are now trying to look ‘progressive’ but the extra state actors like Jamat e Islami and many other Jamats have destroyed the social fabric in the two countries...

Jaipur, The closing ceremony of the joint military exercise between Indian and French Army, ‘Exercise SHAKTI-2019’ concluded at Mahajan Field Firing Range, Rajasthan, on Wednesday. The ceremony was reviewed by Brigadier General Jean Christophe Bechon, Commandant 6th Light Armoured Brigade, French Army and Major General Inderjit Singh, General Officer Commanding, Gandiv Division of Sapta Shakti Command. An infantry platoon group of The Sikh Regiment part of Sapta Shakti Command and a platoon group of the 21st Marine Infantry Regiment, part of 6th Armoured Brigade, represented India and France respectively in the exercise. Exercise SHAKTI-2019 was a two-phased exercise. In the inter-operability phase, the contingents underwent rigorous combat conditioning and tactical training. The training received by both the armies in inter-operability phase was put into practice in the validation phase. The contingents jointly took part in the validation exercise which included establishment of observation posts, cordon and search operation and house clearing drills. Washington,(Samajweekly) US President Donald Trump’s administration has filed an emergency application to block the release of a memoir by former National Security Adviser (NSA) John Bolton. The application filed on Wednesday requested the Court for the District of Columbia to hold a hearing on the issue on Friday, before the scheduled publication of “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir” on June 22, reports Efe news. The manuscript “still contains classified information, as confirmed by some of the Government’s most senior national-security and intelligence officials”, a memo by the Department of Justice (DoJ) supporting the argument, said. “Disclosure of the manuscript will damage the national security of the US,” it continued. The filing came hours after several US media outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, on Wednesday published excerpts from Bolton’s book.
