And you know, that will be challenging,” Powell made the remarks in a virtual discussion with former Fed Vice Chairman Alan Blinder, held by the Princeton University, on Friday. He said a full recovery of the economy will really depend on people being confident that it is safe to go out and safe to engage in a broad range of economic activities, reports Xinhua news agency. “That’s how the economy will recover,” he said. “I think a second wave could be what would really undermine public confidence and might make for a significantly longer recovery, weaker recovery.” When asked about the Fed’s stance on negative interest rates, Powell said “we don’t think that that’s an inappropriate tool here in the US”. “I would say the evidence on whether it actually works is mixed,” he said. “There were clearly some negative side effects.” In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Fed cut interest rates to near zero at two unscheduled meetings in March and began purchasing massive quantities of US treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities to repair financial markets...

Guwahati Central Jail becomes Assam’s new containment zone

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) The Guwahati Central Jail was on Friday declared as containment zone after a jail inmate tested coronavirus positive, an official said. Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu, in a notification declared the jail premises as “containment zone” after the detection of the case. “Any unauthorised entry or exit and movement of any vehicle have been barred till the area is declared safe as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,” said Pegu, also the chairman of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority. Jail sources said that the prisoner who had tested Covid-19 had been arrested earlier this week on charges of theft, and was brought to the jail with six other people on June 1 after a local court sent them to judicial custody. The Guwahati Central Jail currently has 1,118 inmates against its capacity of housing 1,000. Assam has six Central jails, 22 district jails, one open air jail, one special jail, one sub-jail and six detention centres for “declared foreigners”. “With 38 new cases, Assam’s Covid-19 count climbed to 2,153 on Friday night, with active cases at 1,637,” state Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma said...

KVIC expects 100,000 new jobs in the agarbatti industry

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...

The lawmakers were planning to conduct transcribed interviews with “key officials” who may know why Linick was fired and how his investigative work at the department may have been a factor in Pompeo’s decision to ask President Donald Trump to remove him, according to a report by The Hill news website. “If Pompeo pushed for Linick’s dismissal to cover up his own misconduct, that would constitute an egregious abuse of power and a clear attempt to avoid accountability,” they said in the statement. Pompeo admitted last week that he recommended to Trump that Linick be terminated earlier this month. The President’s decision has sparked an inquiry by Democrats and scrutiny even by a number of Republicans on Capitol. As IG, Linick was responsible for, among other things, conducting administrative and criminal investigations of waste, fraud, mismanagement, and misconduct in the State Department. This is in addition to the Rs 5,655.75 crore of investment by Silver Lake announced on May 4, and brings the aggregate investment by Silver Lake and its co-investors to Rs 10,202.55 crore. Silver Lake’s investment values Jio Platforms at an equity value of Rs 4.91 lakh crore and an enterprise value of Rs 5.16 lakh crore, and will translate into a 2.08 per cent equity stake in Jio Platforms on a fully diluted basis. This is an unprecedented seventh investment in Jio Platforms in just six weeks. With this investment, Jio Platforms has raised Rs 92,202.15 crore from leading technology investors including Facebook, Silver Lake Partners, Vista Equity Partners, General Atlantic, KKR and Mubadala. Commenting on the aggregate investment brought by Silver Lake, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Ltd, said: “Silver Lake and its co-investors are valued partners as we continue to grow and transform the Indian digital ecosystem for the benefit of all Indians.
