Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor, G.C. Murmu, on Thursday handed over an ex-gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of Sarpanch Ajay Bharti, who was killed by terrorists in Anantnag district on Monday. While paying homage to Bharti, Murmu observed that the supreme sacrifice made by him would always be remembered and the perpetrators of the dastardly act would realise their follies and desist from committing crimes against humanity, a statement issued by the government said. “The relief amounting to Rs 20 lakh includes Rs 5 lakh from SRE, Rs 1 lakh as ex-gratia from the government, Rs 4 lakh from Lt Governor Relief Fund, and Rs 10 lakh out of the Panchayat Welfare Fund,” the statement said. Ajay Pandita Bharti, a resident of Panchayat Halqa Lukhbawan in Anantnag district, was killed after terrorists shot at him from close range on Monday. The trust will also set up a website with an inbuilt gateway to receive donations online. “The Trust has decided to open accounts in two private sector banks for receiving donations. Both will be current accounts. Complying with the Supreme Court’s verdict, the Trust will construct a mosque, a hospital, community kitchen, and a library on the 5-acre land allotted to the Waqf Board at Dhannipur village in Ayodhya district,” said Trust Secretary Athar Hussain. A financial officer too has been appointed for audit and keep the records of funds received, he said. “… even non-Muslims are welcome to donate. Amaravati, (Samajweekly) Three lawyers resigned as Andhra Pradesh government pleaders in the state High Court on Thursday and their replacements were also announced. Penumaka Venkat Rao, Gaddam Satish Babu and Habeen Sheik submitted their resignations. It was not clear if they resigned on their own or the government asked them to put in their papers. Their resignations came in the wake of a series of setbacks faced by the Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy state government in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. There has been criticism of the legal team of the government for failing to effectively defend the government’s action on various issues. Meanwhile, the government appointed Sumathi, Vaddiboyana Sujatha and Kiran Tirumalasetti as the new government pleaders in the high court. Guwahati Central Jail becomes Assam’s new containment zone

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) The Guwahati Central Jail was on Friday declared as containment zone after a jail inmate tested coronavirus positive, an official said. Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu, in a notification declared the jail premises as “containment zone” after the detection of the case. “Any unauthorised entry or exit and movement of any vehicle have been barred till the area is declared safe as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,” said Pegu, also the chairman of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority. Jail sources said that the prisoner who had tested Covid-19 had been arrested earlier this week on charges of theft, and was brought to the jail with six other people on June 1 after a local court sent them to judicial custody. The Guwahati Central Jail currently has 1,118 inmates against its capacity of housing 1,000. Assam has six Central jails, 22 district jails, one open air jail, one special jail, one sub-jail and six detention centres for “declared foreigners”. “With 38 new cases, Assam’s Covid-19 count climbed to 2,153 on Friday night, with active cases at 1,637,” state Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma said...

The former Minister could not get accustomed to foods served in Tihar Jail and complained of losing weight in the custody. After considering his health conditions and several requests, a Delhi court on October 3 allowed him home-cooked food once a day.
