Hong Kong polls: Pro-democracy groups make big gains

Hong Kong, According to early results, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement has made unprecedented gains in the district council elections, media reports said on Monday. In the figures put out till now, pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats as against pro-Beijing candidates 42. Hong Kong’s district councillors have little political power and mainly deal with local issues such as bus routes and rubbish collection. And as such they have never normally generated interest, however, these polls were the first time people could express at the ballot box their opinion on embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of the crisis, which was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition law. There was huge turnout even to witness the counting process. Outside the Yau Ma Tei North polling station, residents lined up and as the doors opened, they poured into the public viewing area, the BBC report said. It appeared they wanted to ensure that the process was fair and transparent.There were loud cheers of astonishment as one surprising result came in after another. Nobody imagined such a comprehensive wipeout, the report said. Despite fears the vote could be disrupted or cancelled over the unrest, it went ahead peacefully. A record 4.1 million people had registered to vote — more than half the population. And more than 2.9 million cast votes for the 452 seats available, a turnout of more than 71 per cent, as against 47 per cent in 2015...

China introduces NCoV close contact detection app

Beijing, China has rolled out a mobile app “close contact detector”, enabling people to check whether they were at the risk of catching the novel coronavirus. Following its release Saturday evening, users can scan a QR code via mobile apps like Alipay, WeChat or QQ to make an inquiry, reports Xinhua news agency. After registering with a phone number, users need to enter their name and ID number to know whether they were in close contact with someone infected. Every registered phone number can be used to inquire for three ID numbers. Those who have been in close contact are advised to stay at home and get in touch with local health authorities. The app was developed by the General Office of the State Council, the National Health Commission and China Electronics Technology Group Corporations (CETC). He said the case was “tragic” but urged reporters to focus instead on China, which he said was a bigger threat to the world than Russia, the BBC reported on Saturday. Nato and Germany say there is “proof beyond doubt” that Navalny was attacked with a Novichok nerve agent. His team said he was poisoned on the Kremlin’s orders. Russia denies this. China confirms progress in trade deal talks with US

Beijing, The Chinese government on Saturday confirmed the progress of trade agreement negotiations with the US and revealed that technical consultations on a part of the agreement’s text had been completed. Vice Premier Liu He, China’s top representative at the negotiating table, held a telephone conversation with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday night. “In the phone talks, the two sides agreed to appropriately address each other’s core concerns, and confirmed that the technical consultations on part of the text of the agreement have been basically completed,” state-owned Xinhua news agency said. The two sides have reached consensus on the US importing Chinese-made cooked poultry meat, the equivalence of catfish product supervision systems, China’s lifting of the ban on US poultry exports, as well as on applying the public health information system of meat products. Chinese Trade Minister Zhong Shan, People’s Bank of China Governor Yi Gang, and National Development and Reform Commission´s Vice Chairman Ning Jizhe were also a part of the talks, which are expected to continue soon, Efe news reported...

No new locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases in China

Beijing, (Samajweekly) No new locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases were reported across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said on Monday. A total of 16 confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. Of the new imported cases, five were reported in Shanghai, three each in the provinces of Fujian, Sichuan and Yunnan, and one each in Shanxi and Shandong, the commission said. On Sunday, 30 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said. By the end of Sunday, a total of 2,418 imported cases had been reported on the mainland. Of them, 2,203 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 215 remained hospitalized, with two in severe condition. As of Monday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases on the mainland had reached 84,967, including 408 patients who were still being treated, with 14 in severe condition. Altogether 79,925 people had been discharged after recovery, and 4,634 had died of the disease on the mainland. According to the commission, 13,220 close contacts were still under medical observation. Also on Sunday, 27 new asymptomatic cases, all from outside the mainland, were reported, and one asymptomatic case was re-categorized as a confirmed one. The commission said 374 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation...

China postpones inter-Afghan peace talks: Taliban

Kabul, The Taliban on Saturday said that China has postponed a round of inter-Afghan negotiations between the militant group and members of Afghanistan’s civil society planned for October 28-29 in Beijing, in an attempt to relaunch the peace process after the US abruptly pulled out of talks with the insurgents. “We are informed by Chinese government (about the delay), they asked for few days,” Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid told Efe news on Saturday. The spokesperson, who admitted to be unaware of the reason for the delay, added that they have not yet been informed of the new dates for the meeting and were waiting for more details. The 15-member Taliban delegation, led by Mullah Baradar, head of the political office of the insurgents in Qatar, were yet to leave for the conference in China, explained Mujahid. The Taliban, which a month ago sent a nine-member delegation to China, said the talks will take place within the framework of earlier negotiations in Moscow and Doha to seek a road map for peace after 18 years of war, and it will be attended by all political parties of the Afghan society, but in their official capacity...
