Mumbai revs back to life in lockdown 5.0

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) After nearly 80 days of lockdown, the country’s commercial capital Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra revved back to life, setting in motion the crucial economic activities that were virtually paralysed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, here on Friday. Most markets, market areas, commercial and trading areas – barring malls or market complexes – in the city and rest of the state reopened for business even as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray reiterated that “people should tread cautiously while beginning a ‘new life’ from today”. As announced earlier, the shops are remaining open on one side of the road on odd-even dates basis, between 9 am-5 pm, with several other conditions, said Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) President Viren Shah. Use of trial rooms in garment outlets is banned, return/exchange is prohibited, strict physical distancing norms must be followed, arrangements for sanitisers and possibly even a thermometer gun at the entrance is must for staffer, in case of overcrowding, sales must stop, he said. Vehicles returned to the roads and highways in large numbers since suburban trains were still not permitted as people trooped to their respective places of businesses. However, private offices shall open from June 8 with 10 percent staff strength, while government offices will work with 15 percent strength though all other emergency, health care services, treasuries, police, disaster management, essential supplies, civic services, etc are exempt from this. While the government has advised people to avoid stepping outdoors, cab aggregators, autorickshaws and taxis can ply with two passengers plus the driver and pillion riding is not permitted on two-wheelers...

The summit will take place in Guwahati this time, which will bring a focus on Japan’s development cooperation in the North-Eastern states. Japanese organisations are actively involved in a variety of projects in the North-East under the Act East Forum that was set up during Abe’s visit to India in 2017. The Act East Forum aimed to expand cooperation between Japan and India in the North-Eastern region. Japan is the only country that the Indian government has allowed to take up developmental projects in the sensitive North-Eastern region. India-Japan summits have a wide agenda of bilateral and global issues. But during the discussions, the Japanese side is likely to inquire about the implications of the Maharashtra government’s recent decision to review the bullet train project. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project, or bullet train project is among the most prestigious Japan-India projects. A shadow was cast on the project when the new Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that his government would review the bullet train project. However, he clarified that his government had not taken a decision to cancel the project. The Maharashtra government is one of the three parties involved in the project and would find it difficult to cancel the project. But the project is likely to be in the doldrums if it loses its priority as a Maharashtra government project...

‘Cyclone Nisarga’: Shah holds meet with Guj, Maha CMs

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a meeting, via video conference, with Gujrat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administrator Praful Patel over cyclone Nisarga. He assured all Central help in view of the impending cyclone and asked the states to chalk out in details the requirements and resources needed to deal with the situation. Earlier, the Home Minister held a meeting to take stock of the situation and preparedness to deal with Cyclone ‘Nisarga’ brewing in the Arabian Sea. Shah held the review meeting with senior officials of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai was also present in the meeting. Days after the country’s eastern coast was battered by Amphan, a fresh cyclone has begun brewing over the Arabian Sea on the western coast and is expected to hit some parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The IMD on Monday sounded a ‘Yellow’ warning for north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coast. Cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and other neighbouring states, the MD cautioned on Monday. It said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigad district and Daman on June 3. The IMD has informed that the well marked low pressure area over southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea & Lakshadweep area concentrated into a depression and it is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 12 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic Storm over East central Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours...
