Chandigarh, Terming the AAP’s proposed protest against stubble-burning in the national capital an obvious political stunt with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections there, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday lashed out at his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal over his “brazen lies on the grave issue of air pollution”. “The air pollution in the capital was directly related to the rampant construction activity, widespread industrialisation and total mismanagement of the city traffic,” he said, hitting out at Kejriwal for “trying desperately to divert public attention from his own government’s failures by indulging in such outright lies”. “By blaming others for his own lapses, Kejriwal was showing signs of his poor leadership.” Describing Kejriwal as a “shameless liar”, Amarinder Singh accused him of resorting to political gimmickry after failing to seriously address the pollution problem in Delhi in the past five years. Johnson sets Oct 15 deadline for EU trade deal

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...

Washington, (Samajweekly) NASA and SpaceX launched Crew Dragon spacecraft from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday, carrying two American astronauts to the International Space Station. The Crew Dragon, atop the Falcon 9 rocket, took off from the same site used for the first moon landing in 1969 at 15.22ET. It’s the first private space vehicle to transport astronauts into orbit, the BBC reported. They’ll reach their initial orbit in around nine minutes, and part of the rocket will return to earth to be reused. Astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken should reach the space station at around 10.30ET/15.30BST on Sunday. 10 minutes after the launch, the first stage of the rocket came down onto the ship, named Of Course I Still Love You. It was the first return of a Falcon 9 rocket that carried humans into space...

New Delhi, Insisting that across the world, civilized countries were demonstrating reduced tolerance levels against terrorism, Air Marshal (retd.) C. Hari Kumar, who was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, and personally supervised the planning and successful execution of the IAF strikes in Balakot sector told IANS, “It has now become important that countries take a pro-active approach and strike at terrorists at their home bases.” Stressing that the Balakot strikes were an example of perfect synergy between RAW, NSA, Ministry of Defence and the armed forced, he said that obtaining reliable intelligence was paramount in the fight against extremism. “During the Balakot mission, we had precise information, and could therefore avoid collateral damage, something which is very important.” Insisting that the Indian defence forces were anticipating a response to Balakot, and were not caught unawares when the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) jets entered Indian territory through Kashmir a few days after the strikes, Kumar added, “It was just a question of when they would do it. We knew they would, and were fully prepared for it.”..

SpaceX sends 2 NASA astronauts to ISS in historic mission

Washington,(Samajweekly) Scripting a historic chapter for the US space programme, Elon Musk-run SpaceX on Saturday sent two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) onboard the reusable Falcon 9 rocket. The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley was on its way to the orbiting laboratory in the space and had safely reached orbit, NASA said in a statement. It is the first time that astronauts have been sent into space from the US soil since 2011. It is also the first time that US astronauts have been sent into space by a private company, signalling an end to the US dependence on the Russian space technology. The Crew Dragon spacecraft lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the same site used for the first moon landing in 1969, reports CNN. “I can’t believe it with my own eyes. I’m so grateful they’re up there,” said SpaceX engineer Lauren Lyons, who frequently hosts SpaceX’s mission webcasts. The journey would take approximately 19 hours and the astronauts should reach the space station at around 10.30 ET (eastern time) on Sunday, according to NASA. After successfully docking, Behnken and Hurley will be welcomed aboard station and will become members of the Expedition 63 crew. They will perform tests on Crew Dragon in addition to conducting research and other tasks with the space station crew. Cyclone ‘Nisarga’: Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. “Nisarga” currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa’s capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, ‘Nisarga’ will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. “The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone,” Vineet Kumar said...

Use of trial rooms in garment outlets is banned, return/exchange is prohibited, strict physical distancing norms must be followed, arrangements for sanitisers and possibly even a thermometer gun at the entrance is must for staffer, in case of overcrowding, sales must stop, he said. Vehicles returned to the roads and highways in large numbers since suburban trains were still not permitted as people trooped to their respective places of businesses. However, private offices shall open from June 8 with 10 percent staff strength, while government offices will work with 15 percent strength though all other emergency, health care services, treasuries, police, disaster management, essential supplies, civic services, etc are exempt from this. While the government has advised people to avoid stepping outdoors, cab aggregators, autorickshaws and taxis can ply with two passengers plus the driver and pillion riding is not permitted on two-wheelers...
