Jodhpur witnesses repeat of George Floyd incident, with a twist

Jaipur, (Samajweekly) A video has gone viral on social media showing what could be called Jodhpur’s George Floyd moment with a twist, showing cops throwing a person on the ground and pressing his neck with their knees for roaming around without a mask. However, unlike the unfortunate incident in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the cops in Jodhpur reportedly acted after the person, said to be mentally challenged, turned violent after being confronted by the police. George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died after being arrested by the police outside a shop in Minneapolis in the US on May 25. Footage showed a white officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes while he was pinned to the floor. He was pronounced dead later in the hospital, triggering widespread protests across the US. However, in the Jodhpur incident, the man, identifed as Mukesh Kumar Prajapat, did not die but instead started fighting with the policemen. Jodhpur police officers confirmed that the video was shot in the city on Thursday after the police wanted to issue a challan against the man for roaming on the streets without wearing a mask before he started manhandling the police. The video shows a cop pressing his neck with his knee while two other cops held the young man’s legs. A huge crowd gathered when the scuffle broke out. Meanwhile, the SHO of Dev Nagar police station, Somkaran, said that the police were issuing a challan to Prajapat when he attacked them and tore their uniform. An FIR has been lodged against Prajapat on a complaint lodged by the Pratap Nagar police station. He will be produced in the court later in the day. Yogi orders NSA against those who burnt Dalit houses

Lucknow, (Samajweekly) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday ordered the invoking of the National Security Act (NSA) against Noor Alam and Javed Siddiqui, the two main accused responsible for setting on fire some houses of Dalits in the Jaunpur district. The Chief Minister, on Wednesday, directed the concerned police officials to book all the accused under the NSA and take action against the Station House Officer (SHO). The Chief Minister also directed the district officials to provide houses to the Dalits whose houses had been destroyed in the incident. The state government’s social welfare department will also give a compensation of Rs one lakh each. It may be recalled that on June 9, a series of houses in the Sarai Khwaja locality had been burnt down following a dispute over plucking mangoes from an orchard. In a letter dated December 15, 2019, Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission Zafarul-Islam Khan said: “The Delhi Minorities Commission orders SHO Kalkaji PS to release the injured students of the Jamia Millia University held at the said police station or to take them, without any delay, for treatment at a reputed hospital.” “SHO Kalkaji PS will be personally responsible for any complications to the injuries of the held students,” the letter further read. Prayagraj, (Samajweekly) Former Uttar Pradesh Minister and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar and 65 others have been booked for violating lockdown restrictions here, police said on Friday. Among other leaders booked were Janadhikar Party chief Babu Singh Kushwaha, Apna Dal chief Krishna Patel, Bhartiya Upekkshit Party chief Prem Chandra Prajapati, Bhartiya Manav Samaj Party head Ramdhani Bind, and 60 others.
