Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor, G.C. Murmu, on Thursday handed over an ex-gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of Sarpanch Ajay Bharti, who was killed by terrorists in Anantnag district on Monday. While paying homage to Bharti, Murmu observed that the supreme sacrifice made by him would always be remembered and the perpetrators of the dastardly act would realise their follies and desist from committing crimes against humanity, a statement issued by the government said. “The relief amounting to Rs 20 lakh includes Rs 5 lakh from SRE, Rs 1 lakh as ex-gratia from the government, Rs 4 lakh from Lt Governor Relief Fund, and Rs 10 lakh out of the Panchayat Welfare Fund,” the statement said. Ajay Pandita Bharti, a resident of Panchayat Halqa Lukhbawan in Anantnag district, was killed after terrorists shot at him from close range on Monday. UN chief urges support for refugees, host communities

United Nations, (Samajweekly) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged support for refugees and their host communities on the occasion of World Refugee Day. Nearly 80 million women, children and men around the world have been forced from their homes as refugees or internally displaced people. Ten million of these people fled in the past year alone, said Guterres in a message for World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. “On World Refugee Day, we pledge to do everything in our power to end the conflict and persecution that drive these appalling numbers. Today, we also recognize the generosity and humanity of host communities and countries that often struggle with their own economic and security concerns. We owe these countries our thanks, our support and our investment,” he said. Guterres asked the international community to work to re-establish the integrity of the international refugee protection regime so that refugees and host communities receive the support they need. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic poses an additional threat to refugees and displaced people, who are among the most vulnerable, he noted, adding that refugees and displaced people are also prominent among those who are stepping up to make a difference on the front lines of the response. “From camps in Bangladesh to hospitals in Europe, refugees are working as nurses, doctors, scientists, teachers and in other essential roles, protecting themselves and giving back to the communities that host them. Speaking at the Peace Memorial Park near Ground Zero, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui said countries should put aside their differences and come together to overcome both man-made and natural challenges, reports The Japan Times newspaper. A moment of silence was observed at 8.15 a.m., the exact time of the bombing on August 6, 1945. But this year’s ceremony was drastically scaled down due to a recent spike in the number of coronavirus in Japan. There were only about 880 seats, less than one-10th of the usual number, and scrapped sections allocated for general admission. Matsui further said that “the people of the world must unite to achieve nuclear weapons abolition and lasting world peace”. Also at the ceremony, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said “each country must step up efforts to “remove a sense of mistrust through mutual involvement and dialogue”, amid the severe security environment and widening differences between nations’ positions on nuclear disarmament. He did refer to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which Japan has refused to participate in, but said it is the country’s duty to continue working toward the abolishment of nuclear weapons.
