Kolkata, Any updation of the NRC beyond Assam would be “anti-people” with the BJP and the RSS endeavouring to use it to further their “divisive communal agenda” and ruin the country’s secular fabric by fomenting “terror and mistrust”, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said here on Thursday. “The Narendra Modi-led BJP government is now harping on extending the NRC process to the entire country. This is uncalled for and it is being done to target certain sections of people polarise the society … Aand thereby consolidate the Hundutva vote bank. “The BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh want to destroy the country’s secular fabric and further their divisive communal agenda by fanning terror and mistrust in the country,” Yechury said speaking at a function commemorating hundred years of the formation of the Communist Party of India at Tashkent, then a part of the USSR. Leading a massive procession to demand the ouster of illegal migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh living in India –a figure he pegged at over two crore — Thackeray said: “A thorough clean-up operation is a must.” Coming out in support of the CAA, he said it has been in existence since 1955, and was intended to give citizenship to persecuted “minorities” in Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan, but the circumstances have changed since then. “The Muslims are taking out morchas around the country…I don’t see the point. Kolkata, Religious polarisation, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the vote catching capacity of a renewed Congress-Left Front alliance could be the game changers as principal rivals Trinamool Congress and the BJP battle it out in the bypolls to three Assembly seats in West Bengal to be held on Monday. The by-elections, the first test of popularity for the state’s political opponents after the Lok Sabha polls, are being held in the backdrop of the tumultuous political developments in Maharashtra. However, back in Bengal, the bypolls are not going to bring about any change of government, yet that fact has by no means diminished their significance. New Delhi, After a row over the delay in announcing total voter turnout for Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, Chief Election Officer Ranbir Singh on Sunday evening blamed the delay on collation of data. Singh informed media that the final voter turnout was 62.59 per cent, which he termed “satisfactory”. He said that the Delhi Cantt seat witnessed the lowest turnout with only 45.4 per cent voters exercising their right to vote, while Ballimaran in old Delhi witnessed the highest, at 71.66 per cent of voters. Okhla Assembly constituency, which houses the anti-CAA hot spot of Shaheen Bagh, saw only 58.84 per cent turnout. Allaying the apprehensions of the Aam Aadmi Party over alleged transportation of EVMs in DTC buses, Singh said the EVMs in question were “reserve” one and a meeting took place at 2p.m. on Sunday in the presence of all representatives of all political parties, following which all expressed satisfaction.
