While 753 patients were discharged on Sunday, taking the total number of discharged patients to 40,365. Gujarat witnessed over 23,000 positive cases detected in the twenty six days of July, almost each day with a new record. On Sunday, the state saw 1,110 positive cases, the highest daily spike on a single day in four months, from 21,708 tests during the past 24 hours, the highest total tests carried out on a single day so far. Surat, the new hotspot is also witnessing each day with a higher count, registering nearly 27 per cent of Sunday’s positive cases. The diamond city recorded 299 cases on Sunday, while Ahmedabad saw 163 cases. Ahmedabad was followed by Vadodara (92), Rajkot (72), Amreli (39), Bhavnagar (31), Banaskantha (30), Narmada (26), Surendranagar (24), Chhota Udepur and Patan (22 each), Junagadh and Kutch (20 each), Gandhinagar and Bharuch (19 each), Gir-Somnath, Mahesana, Navsari and Panchmahals (18 each), Valsad (15), Sabarkantha (14), Anand (11), Morbi (10), Kheda and Tapi (9 each), Dang (6), Botad (5), Devbhumi Dwarka (4), Aravalli and Mahisagar (3 each) and Porbandar with two positive cases...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) India’s novel Coronavirus tally crossed the 23-lakh mark on Wednesday with detection of 60,963 new cases in the last 24 hours, while 834 more fatalities took the death toll to 46,091, the Health Ministry said. Out of the total 2,329,638 cases, recoveries surged to 1,639,599 as a record 56,110 more patients recovered during the period. The recovery rate is nearly 70 per cent now. The active cases in the country currently total 6,43,948. Notably, the fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die of the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to about two per cent, the Ministry said. The country had touched the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and added more than 3,00,000 cases in less than five days. The silver lining, however, is that the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day. Currently, recoveries are 10 lakh more than the active cases. As many as 7,33,449 samples were tested on Tuesday, taking the total to 2,60,15,297 samples till date, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 5,24,513 cases and 18,050 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 302,815 cases and 5041 deaths. The southern state is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Chief Ministers and representatives of 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh for a review meeting. He mentioned that almost 80 per cent of the active cases are from the participating 10 states, and if the virus is defeated in these states, the entire country will emerge victorious in the battle against COVID-19...

Hong Kong, According to early results, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement has made unprecedented gains in the district council elections, media reports said on Monday. In the figures put out till now, pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats as against pro-Beijing candidates 42. Hong Kong’s district councillors have little political power and mainly deal with local issues such as bus routes and rubbish collection. And as such they have never normally generated interest, however, these polls were the first time people could express at the ballot box their opinion on embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of the crisis, which was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition law. There was huge turnout even to witness the counting process. Outside the Yau Ma Tei North polling station, residents lined up and as the doors opened, they poured into the public viewing area, the BBC report said. It appeared they wanted to ensure that the process was fair and transparent.There were loud cheers of astonishment as one surprising result came in after another. Nobody imagined such a comprehensive wipeout, the report said. Despite fears the vote could be disrupted or cancelled over the unrest, it went ahead peacefully. A record 4.1 million people had registered to vote — more than half the population. And more than 2.9 million cast votes for the 452 seats available, a turnout of more than 71 per cent, as against 47 per cent in 2015...

The new case take the state’s tally to 4,835. “New cases reported from Thursday 5 p.m. to Friday 5 p.m., 515,” said a health official. On Friday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Mandya, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru Rural. Udupi saw a record 204 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Yadgir (74), Vijayapura (53), Kalaburagi (42), Bidar (39), Belagavi (36), Mandya (13), Bengaluru Rural (12), Bengaluru Urban (10), Dakshaina Kannada (8), Uttara Kannada (7), Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (3 each), Haveri and Ramanagara (2 each) and Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar (1 each). Raichur did not record a case and Hassan only three. Of the new cases, 363 were men and 152 were women. On a positive note, 83 people got discharged in the past 24 hours. Trump made a surprise appearance interrupting the roll call of votes after enough had been recorded for his renomination and defended his record in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and building the economy besides criticising Biden. He said he would bring jobs back to the US and continue his tariff battle with other countries — both of which would impact India. Trump, who has overwhelmed the Republican Party and rewritten the rules of political engagement and set the country on a new conservative and nationalistic path, takes on Biden with his liberal platform in one of the most divisive campaigns. Trump won 2,550 votes of delegates elected in the primaries — the intra-party elections. Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld ran against Trump in the primaries, but was crushed by the Trump juggernaut and received just one vote. Trump accused the Democrats of “using Covid to steal the election” by introducing universal mail-in votes in some states that he said can be manipulated by the Democrats and asked his party members to watch out. Under this system, every voter in those states would get postal ballots even without requesting for them. While the convention was in progress, a panel of the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives was holding a hearing with Postmaster General Louis Dejoy, whom they accused of dismantling the postal system to disrupt the postal balloting...
