New Delhi, Space missions are expected to fail which must not deter the scientific community in India that saw the Vikram lander not making it to the lunar surface from attempting again, as this is the business out there, Tom Soderstrom, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at NASA JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), has stressed. The debris of the crashed Vikram lander on the lunar surface has been located though there is a sort of discrepancies in who located it first: NASA or the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The big takeaway from the Chandrayaan-2 mission is that space probes are bound to fail and none other than NASA knows it better. “It’s a very difficult thing to land a rover. It’s amazing that it ever works. So we get super nervous every single time. We never know if it’s going to work there, one little thing goes wrong and the whole thing is expected to fail,” Soderstrom told IANS. “That’s the business because it’s a difficult business. I wouldn’t lose heart just because we lost one or two rovers. When we went to the Moon, it failed time and time again, but eventually it worked. You learn,” Soderstrom added...

George Floyd’s funeral hears calls for racial justice

Houston, (Samajweekly) The funeral for African American George Floyd, whose death in police custody caused global outrage, heard impassioned pleas for racial justice. Speakers in the church in Houston, Texas, lined up to remember a man whose “crime was that he was born black”, the BBC reported. Floyd died in Minneapolis last month as a white police officer held a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes, his final moments filmed on phones. Four police officers involved have been sacked and charged over his death. His coffin was taken to the Houston Memorial Gardens where he was buried beside his mother. One of Floyd’s nieces, Brooke Williams, called for a change in laws which, she argued, were designed to disadvantage black people. “Why must this system be corrupt and broken?” she asked “Laws were already put in place for the African-American system to fail. And these laws need to be changed. No more hate crimes, please! Someone said ‘Make America Great Again’ but when has America ever been great?” Republican President Donald Trump’s Democratic opponent in the November presidential election, Joe Biden. addressed the service in a video message, saying: “When there is justice for George Floyd, we will truly be on our way to racial justice in America.” Biden has sharply criticised Trump, accusing him at the weekend of making “despicable” speculative remarks about Floyd. But the Democratic politician was himself recently accused of taking black American votes for granted when he said African Americans “ain’t black” if they even considered voting for Trump...

UK airlines launch quarantine legal challenge

London, (Samajweekly) British Airways, Ryanair and Easyjet said on Friday that they have filed a formal legal challenge to the UK governments 14-day quarantine policy. In a statement, the three airlines said the policy, which came into force this week, will have “a devastating effect on British tourism and the wider economy and destroy thousands of jobs”, the BBC reported. They have applied for a judicial review at the High Court, and asked for it to be heard as soon as possible. The challenge claims that the quarantine rules for travellers are more stringent than those applied to people who actually have COVID-19; there was no consultation and no scientific evidence provided to support the policy; weekly commuters from France or Germany can be exempted; and that the government is preventing people from travelling to and from countries with lower infection rates than the UK. In the statement, the airlines said they had not seen any evidence on how and when so-called “air bridges” – allowing quarantine-free travel between the UK and other countries with low infection rates – could be implemented. They have called on the government instead to re-adopt a previous policy, where quarantine was limited to travellers from high-risk countries. Under the new rules, those arriving in the UK should drive their own car to their destination, where possible, and once at their destination they must not use public transport or taxis, the BBC reported. They must not go to work, school, or public areas, or have visitors – except for essential support. Those arriving in England and Northern Ireland could face a fine of 1,000 pounds if they fail to self-isolate for the full 14 days, while they face a 480 pounds fine in Scotland...

Telangana privatises 50% RTC, issues ultimatum to striking staff

Hyderabad, Unfazed by the ongoing strike by the employees of state-owned Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), the state government on Saturday announced privatisation of 50 per cent of RTC routes and warned the employees that if they fail to join duty inside the next three days, it will privatise the remaining routes. The major decision was taken at the state Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao. He told reporters after the meeting that private operators will be allowed to run buses on 5,100 routes. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, said he was giving a chance to the striking employees to save their jobs and the future of their families. “If they don’t return to work by November 5 midnight, we will privatise remaining 5,000 routes,” he said. Rao said the decision to privatise the routes was irrevocable as the state was empowered to do so under the Motor Vehicle Act, 2019. The Chief Minister once again ruled out the merger of TSRTC with the government. He said the Cabinet passed a resolution that TSRTC can’t be merged with the government...

Mumbai, The Bombay High Court on Friday asked senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, former Forward Market Commission (FMC) Chairman Ramesh Abhishek and serving bureaucrat K.P. Krishnan to file their statements in the the Rs 10,000 crore damage suit filed by 63 Moons Technologies within four weeks. The court warned the three that this would be the last extension given to them, as they missed the deadline for the second time. The bench said that if the three fail to submit the statements within the four-week deadline, it would be considered as an undefended suit. In October 22, 2019, the Bombay High Court had directed Chidambaram, Abhishek and Krishnan to file their written statements within eight weeks in the Rs 10,000 crore damage suit filed by 63 Moons Technologies Limited. The court had also rejected the plea of Chidambaram’s counsel for further liberty, saying that eight-week time is more than enough to file the written statements. In February, 63 Moons had said that it has served legal notice to Chidambaram and two others seeking damages worth Rs 10,000 crore...
