Over 100 rioters have been arrested, said the police on Wednesday. Around 60 police personnel have sustained injuries in the violent incidents of stone pelting and attacks by rioters that erupted on Tuesday evening. Police had to resort to firing in order to bring the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of the violence. City Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said that 110 rioters have been arrested in connection with the violence. He also tweeted that the nephew of local MLA, accused of circulating an offensive Facebook post, has been arrested. Police officials said that protestors had rained bottles at a police van transporting police personnel to the affected area. Property of the Congress Legislator from Pulakeshi Nagar constituency was attacked and vandalised while several police vehicles were damaged in the violence unleashed by the irate mob on Tuesday...

Kerala IT takes a beating, faces Rs 4,500 cr loss in Q1

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Thiruvananthapuram, (Samajweekly) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that the IT sector in the state has lost revenues to the tune of Rs 4,500 crore in the first quarter of the present fiscal, on account of the Covid pandemic. He also pointed out studies conducted by the State Planning Board have now estimated a loss of jobs, to the extent of 26,000 direct jobs and 80,000 indirect jobs. “To provide an impetus to the IT sector, what we have decided is to give a relaxation of rent for three months to companies operating from state-run IT parks and the companies can decide on which three months they would like in the present fiscal. Moreover, we expect to provide that in the next fiscal, there will be no normal annual escalation in rent,” Vijayan said. As on date, the total IT software exports from Kerala is pegged at around Rs 20,000 crore from the three parks here, and at Kochi, and Kozhikode besides small other IT firms and start-ups across the state. The total direct employment is around 1.10 lakh. Vijayan also pointed out that he has assured the IT industry that if there are any outstanding payments from the state government to companies, they will be cleared at the earliest and the government will take up with banks on how best they can come to the help of such companies which require any working capital needs. “Today the situation is that it is work from home for most IT companies. We have also suggested that there should be a new model ‘work near home’ units that has to be started. A ‘work sharing bench’ also should begin and any IT company or even the government, if they need extra hands, should take from this work sharing bench. IT companies, when they get new projects, should first fill up vacancies from this bench and then only look for fresh appointments,” added Vijayan...

Optimism over Indore investment summit

Indore, Can Chief Minister Kamal Nath dispel the pervading cynicism over big ticket investments in Madhya Pradesh? The strike rate of the preceding government headed by Shivraj Singh Chouhan through the past 15 years had been far from satisfactory. Apart from the smaller investment meets in the regional towns, three major summits in the commercial hub of Indore in 2012, 2014 and 2016 were held at an average cost of Rs 70 crore. The first investors’ summit after the ascent of Congress government tagged as “Magnificent MP” is being organised at Indore on Friday at a cost of about Rs 30 crore less than half the cost. Kamal Nath has promised a much higher yield. More importantly, the government is upbeat on the prospects of employment generation through the leap in industrialisation. Questions were raised on the feasibility of the claim of 70 per cent jobs for sons of the soil. Kamal Nath says states like Kerala, Andhra and west Bengal have sought and got more from the industrialists in their states. Now, on the eve of the investment Summit, the government says 900 industrialists have been invited by the Department of Industry to attend the summit. WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bhopal, The Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh plans big ticket changes in employment rules for recruitment to maximise its intake and keep the cost in check. Employees recruited at different rungs, including officers, will be on probation for three years instead of two as is the case now. During this time, they will be paid a certain percentage of salary which will rise to full level from the fourth year. This will provide a big relief to the government which is struggling with economic crisis. Sources say that entry level staff will receive 70 per cent of the minimum salary in the first year, 80 per cent in the second and 90 per cent in the third year. Full salary will be paid from the fourth year. At present, the employees get full salary from the first month itself, and from the third year they are given an increment of two years of the probation period. The General Administration Department has drawn up a proposal to this effect which will be placed before the Cabinet shortly, say government sources. The Madhya Pradesh Civil Services General Conditions 1961 are being amended to this effect...

Khan’s lawyer Irfan Ghazi said, “The Mathura jail administration informed us at 11.00 p.m. that Dr. Kafeel Khan is being released around midnight, he walked out of jail.” The Allahabad High Court had quashed his detention under the National Security Act and ordered his immediate release. Khan was in jail since January after he delivered an allegedly provocative speech at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December last year. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, passed the order on a petition filed by Khan’s mother Nuzhat Parveen. The petition argued that Khan was granted bail in February by a competent court and he was supposed to be released on bail. However, he was not released for four days and the NSA was subsequently invoked against him. Hence, his detention was illegal, the petition stated...
