Top militant Riyaz Naikoo, associate killed, bravehearts avenged

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) In a major success in anti-militancy operations in J&K, security forces on Wednesday killed the most wanted militant commander, Riyaz Naikoo along with his associate in Pulwama district thereby avenging the deaths of five security men killed in Kupwara district on May 3. Naikoo, Kashmir’s most wanted terrorist and Hizbul chief was trapped late on Tuesday in his native Beighpora village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The Hizbul Mujahiddin commander and and his associate were killed early on Wednesday while another militant was killed in a separate operation in Sharshali village of Khrew area in Pulwama district away from Naikoo’s encounter spot. Confirming Naikoo’s death a senior security forces officer said, “Naikoo has been neutralized along with his associate. “We had said that the martyrdom of our bravehearts, Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, major Anuj Sood, Lance naik Dinesh Singh, naik Rakesh Kumar and sub-inspector Saqeer Khan would be avenged and that pledge has been fulfilled within three days.” Two terrorists, a Pakistan national and a local terrorist were also killed in the encounter in Chanjimulla village of Handwara tehsil on May 3 along with bravehearts. Officials said the operation to eliminate Naikoo was carried out with pinpoint precision without any collateral damage. Authorities have suspended mobile Internet across the Kashmir Valley and imposed curfew in most major towns of the valley to ensure that no ugly fallout of Naikoo’s death affects the law and order. A video conferencing meeting was reportedly held earlier between senior officers of the Union Home Ministry and J&K top brass to address any law and order issues peacefully...

50% drop in deaths of security men in J&K in 2020

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) There has been a 50 per cent decline in incidents of security forces killed in Jammu & Kashmir during operations this year so far compared to last year’s corresponding period, data has revealed. As per the data compiled by the Jammu & Kashmir Police, a total of 36 security personnel were killed this year between January and July while the number was 76 last year during the same period. However, the data said, injuries to security forces have increased this year. A total of 138 security force personnel were injured this year so far compared to last year’s 107 cases during January to July, the data says, adding the number was more than 3,300 during the Burhan Wani incident in 2016. More than 3,300 security personnel from Jammu & Kashmir Police and central paramilitary forces were injured while maintaining law and order in the valley in over 1,000 violent incidents in Kashmir since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8, 2016, the J&K Police said. Speaking on the trend, Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbag Singh told IANS that casualties of security forces during operations have been very low this year compared to previous years following strategic action against active anti-national groups and banning of several organisations like Jamaat-e-Islami by the Centre...

The 1985-batch officer of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, Srivastava will replace incumbent Amulya Patnaik, whose one month extension to the post will end on Saturday. Srivastava, is presently the Special Commissioner, and he has been given additional charge of Delhi Police Commissioner till March 1, 2020 and until further orders, a Home Ministry order said. Srivastava was earlier posted as Special Director General (Training) with the Central Reserve Police Force. He was ADG (western zone) looking after Jammu and Kashmir at the peak of violence in 2016-17 when Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was gunned down. B’desh Police foil major terror attack plan, nab 5 ultras

Dhaka, (Samajweekly) A counterterrorism team arrested five members of Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo JMB) on Tuesday even as the banned outfit was planning to carry out major terror attacks in the country, a senior police officer said. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime (CCTC) Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam confirmed the arrests by a team of CTTC from Sylhet and said that they are being brought to national capital Dhaka for further questioning. The arrested men included two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet and one student of Madan Mohan College in Sylhet, Sylhet police officials said. The militant outfit is led by Naimuzzaman in the Sylhet region. Islam said that continuous successful operations by the police had prevented militants from organising large number of ultras and carry out their sinister plans for massive terror attacks. “The five arrested militants were found involved in a bomb attack on a Naogaon temple before Eid and planting a bomb on a police motorcycle in Dhaka’s Paltan, Islam said. The militants were planning to attack the Shahjalal shrine in Sylhet. They had planned the attack on Naogaon temple before Eid and assigned some local contacts for the blast, the police said. ..
