Dhankhar gets Z catgory security, Trinamool criticises move

Kolkata, The continuing friction between West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar intensified on Thursday with the Centre deploying the CRPF to provide him ‘Z’ category security cover, a decision the ruling Trinamool Congress called “unprecedented”. A person under the Z category security cover is assigned 22 personnel. The decision apparently stemmed from the situation Dhankhar faced last month at the Jadavpur University where he had gone to “rescue” Union Minister Babul Supriyo who was heckled by a section of students in the campus. Dhankhar was stranded for close to an hour in the campus as the radical Left protesters held a sit-in demonstration and even lay prostrate before his vehicle. It is learnt that following the incident, Raj Bhavan had intimated to the state administration the need to review the Governor’s security. 2 CRPF personnel in Jharkhand killed in fratricidal firing

New Delhi, An Assistant Commandant and an Assistant Sub Inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force deployed for Jharkhand elections have been killed in fratricidal firing, while two others, including the shooter were left injured, CRPF said on Tuesday. “Incident occurred at location of C/226Bn, deployed for Jharkhand elections in which 2 personnel were killed and 2 injured (including the firer),” a statement by CRPF read. The injured personnel have been evacuated to Ranchi for treatment, as the paramilitary has ordered enquiry in the matter. Last week, five Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel deployed in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region to fight Maoists were shot dead by another soldier at the paramilitary force’s camp. The constable who turned his service weapon on his colleagues later shot himself dead, a senior police officer said. Two more jawans were also injured in the incident...

New Delhi, Even as the nation commemorated the 40 CRPF men martyred in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir a year ago, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday asked who benefited from the terror attack. The BJP hit back, claiming that he had given a “clean chit” to Pakistan in the case. Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “Today, as we remember our 40 CRPF martyrs in the Pulwama attack, let us ask: Who benefited the most from the attack? What is the outcome of the inquiry into the attack? Who in the BJP government has been held accountable for the security lapses that allowed the attack?” Some vehicles in a convoy of 78 buses carrying around 2,500 security personnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway were rammed by an explosive-laden vehicle driven by a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad at Lethpora in Pulwama district on February 14 last year, resulting in the deaths of 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel and the attacker. A Court of Inquiry as well as an internal inquiry by the CRPF into the attack were ordered, though the government is yet to reveal their reports.
