Mumbai, Financially troubled Yes Bank on Saturday reported a standalone net loss of Rs 18,560.31 crore for the third quarter of the financial year 2019-20. This is amongst the biggest losses reported by the India Inc. At present, the private lender is under a moratorium and is controlled by the office of the administrator appointed by the RBI. The bank had reported a net profit of Rs 1,001.85 crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Besides, the bank’s total income fell to Rs 6,268.50 crore from Rs 8,849.81 crore earned during the October-December quarter of the previous fiscal. On consolidated basis, Yes Bank reported a net loss of Rs 18,564.24 crore for the December quarter from a net profit of Rs 1,000.57 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The independent auditor’s review report on the consolidated results pointed out that there is a “material uncertainty related to going concern” of the bank. “The said assumption of going concern is dependent upon the degree of success of the final reconstruction scheme, the quantum of capital infused into the bank and the bank’s ability to stabalise its deposit balances post withdrawal of the moratorium by the RBI. Our conclusion is not modified in respect of this matter,” the auditor said...

As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Kolkata, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged India Inc to come forward and convert the ongoing COVID-19 crisis into a turning point for the industries to make India a self-reliant nation. Addressing the inaugural speech on the 95th annual plenary session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) via video conferencing, the Prime Minister said: “India is facing a lot of challenges — be it COVID-19 pandemic, locust swarms invasion, cyclone Amphan, mild tremors and recently the gas well explosion in Assam’s Tinsukia. Corona pandemic would be the turning point for all of us as India becomes self-reliant due to this crisis. Time has come to become self-reliant and we must turn this crisis into an opportunity.” Harping on the issue of speedily implementation of policies declared to make India self-reliant, he said that “Aatmanirbhar” (being self-reliant) lessons start at home and it is high time that India becomes ‘vocal for local’. He said that self-reliant India is based on self-confident Indians. “People of India have always lived the aspiration to be self-reliant. Crisis has always helped strengthen our will power. Our industries should take advantage of the trust factor developed towards India as the world is now looking for a reliable partner. Our industry players will have to think on how they will turn India into the next exporters’ hub,” Modi said, adding that it is only possible when we execute things unitedly. He said that it is a testing time for Indians, but how we fight out the crisis would determine the future course of the country. The Prime Minister said that Indians are saving a total of Rs 19,000 crore due to usage of the LED bulbs. Carbon emissions have also reduced significantly due to the same...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...

New Delhi, The US-made heavy-calibre Sig Sauer assault rifles are set to boost the combat lethality of Indian troops. The first batch of these rifles will be given to them this December. As per the deal signed in February by the Ministry of Defence with US arms major Sig Sauer, 72,400 rifles will be purchased at Rs 700 crore. These assault rifles will suit the army’s operational tactic of ‘shoot to kill’ instead of incapacitation’, according to defence experts. These weapons may give an upper hand to troops in insurgency-hit areas. Troops are at present dependent on the INSAS rifles and have to wait for indigenous mass production of AK-203 rifles of Russian origin, the experts say. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said, here last week, by the end of year the first batch of the Sig Sauer rifles would arrive in a dismantled state and would be provided to troops after being assembled in the country. The INSAS, designed by the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), was inducted into the army in 1994. But armed forces have not found the weapon reliable in terms of combat lethality, weight and sighting system...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Thiruvananthapuram, (Samajweekly) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that the IT sector in the state has lost revenues to the tune of Rs 4,500 crore in the first quarter of the present fiscal, on account of the Covid pandemic. He also pointed out studies conducted by the State Planning Board have now estimated a loss of jobs, to the extent of 26,000 direct jobs and 80,000 indirect jobs. “To provide an impetus to the IT sector, what we have decided is to give a relaxation of rent for three months to companies operating from state-run IT parks and the companies can decide on which three months they would like in the present fiscal. Moreover, we expect to provide that in the next fiscal, there will be no normal annual escalation in rent,” Vijayan said. As on date, the total IT software exports from Kerala is pegged at around Rs 20,000 crore from the three parks here, and at Kochi, and Kozhikode besides small other IT firms and start-ups across the state. The total direct employment is around 1.10 lakh. Vijayan also pointed out that he has assured the IT industry that if there are any outstanding payments from the state government to companies, they will be cleared at the earliest and the government will take up with banks on how best they can come to the help of such companies which require any working capital needs. “Today the situation is that it is work from home for most IT companies. We have also suggested that there should be a new model ‘work near home’ units that has to be started. A ‘work sharing bench’ also should begin and any IT company or even the government, if they need extra hands, should take from this work sharing bench. IT companies, when they get new projects, should first fill up vacancies from this bench and then only look for fresh appointments,” added Vijayan...
