US COVID-19 death toll projected to top 230,000 by Nov

Washington, (Samajweekly) The COVID-19 death toll in the US is projected to top 230,822 by November, said the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington. On July 22, the institute forecasted a total of 219,864 deaths from COVID-19 by November in the US, Xinhua news agency quoted CNN report as saying on Thursday. The updated projection is based on the current scenario in the US where infection cases rise and some people refuse to wear masks and practice social distancing, or other measures, said the IHME in its projection model. If the country universally adopts wearing masks, the number of deaths by November would drop to nearly 198,831, it said. As of Friday morning, the US accounted for the world’s highest number of infections and fatalities at 4,494,252 and 152,055, according to the Johns Hopkins University...

Haryana doctors in private hospitals to get ex gratia

Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday announced that doctors, nurses, paramedics and other staff working in private hospitals in the state would also be extended the benefit of enhanced ex gratia available for those working in government sector. Besides, he also announced to extend the date for repayment of crop loans by farmers from April 15 to June 30. Khattar made these announcements in an address telecast live. The Chief Minister said that now the doctors, nurses, paramedics and other staff working in private hospitals would also get the benefit of ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 30 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively in case they were not covered under the newly introduced Rs 50 lakh insurance cover of the Centre. Earlier, the Chief Minister had announced substantial increases in ex gratia amounts for doctors, nurses, paramedics, whether regular, adhoc, outsourced or contractual, working in Covid testing labs, ambulances carrying corona positive patients or isolation wards in government hospitals of the State. Jamaatis misbehave with hospital staff in Kanpur

Kanpur, (Samajweekly) Yet another case of Tablighi Jamaat members, admitted to a hospital here, misbehaving with the hospital staff has come to light. The Jamaatis admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur, have allegedly refused to take medicines and have misbehaved with the medical staff, prompting the authorities to remove female staffers from there. Aarti Lalchandani, a senior doctor at the hospital, said, “Our team is engaged in providing healthcare services to those admitted here.
