Romanian President Klaus Iohannis wins second term

Bucharest, Klaus Iohannis was elected as Romanian President for a second term in the presidential election on Sunday, after he defeated his rival, Social Democrat and former Prime Minister Viorica Dancila. “It’s an important victory, the most categorical victory ever obtained against the Social Democratic Party (PSD),” said Iohannis from the headquarters of the National Liberal Party (PNL), which he heads, just after the exit polls foreshadowed his triumph with more than 66 per cent of the votes. “I accept this victory with joy, with modesty and with confidence in Romania,” Efe news quoted Romania’s President as saying. With 94 per cent of the precincts reporting, Iohannis obtained 62.8 per cent of the vote to Dancila’s 37.1 per cent, according to figures published by the Central Election Office. The president said that he was not “at war with the PSD voters, but rather with the PSD,” a party that has been tainted by corruption allegations but that has dominated the political scene in recent years and has been harshly criticized both within the country and from abroad...

New Delhi, Citing the gang-rape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad and the subsequent killing of all the four accused in a police ‘encounter’, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) R.M. Lodha said on Tuesday that while we are celebrating the Human Rights Day, the fact of the matter is that we are struggling to protect human rights. “Are we heading towards a society of lawlessness? Has the rule of law run its course? What happened to the constitutional rights and procedural safeguards,” asked Lodha while speaking at an event to mark Human Rights Day organised by the International Institute of Human Rights here. “People are going back to the 17th century Hammurabi’s code of laws: Eye for eye, tooth for tooth and nail for nail,” he added. Supreme Court judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who was also present at the event, cited the Unnao rape survivor lying burnt on the road and the scene of dead bodies of the alleged accused in the Hyderabad case to present two facets of the country...

Nehru puts Nitish-BJP marriage on the rocks!

Mumbai, The road crossing the Patna Golf Club and Patna Public Service Commission and leading to Bihar Human Rights Commission has become the latest testament that all is not well between Nitish Kumar and the BJP. The calm on the surface is deceiving. The road that is even today called Bailey Road, in spite of being earlier renamed Jawaharlal Nehru Marg has once again being re-christened. Guess against whose name? Its renamed after India’s first Prime Minister, once again to call it “Nehru Path”. Nehru has been central to Congress ethos and the biggest punching bag for the BJP. Even recently, Amit Shah blamed the existence of Article 370 on Pandit Nehru. This change of name of a road is anything but a regular administrative work and has deep seeded political messaging by Nitish Kumar for its ally – the BJP, in the state. The goal to rename a road after Nehru that was already named after Nehru was two-fold- to send feelers to Congress and more importantly to warn BJP. This September, Kumar accepted that there is a problem in the alliance by unilaterally saying that there isn’t any. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Emphasising on the wildlife protection, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on the occasion of World Environment Day and birth anniversary of Saint Kabir recited one of his couplets asking “to be prepared and take action now”. “Kal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab, pal me parlay hoyegi, bahuri karoge kab’ (It is important to complete one’s task today itself and not to postpone it indefinitely. What if world was to end in the next moment? Be prepared, take action now),” he tweeted. Kabir was an intellectual saint, who worked towards reforming India through his teachings. These teachings were the basis of knowledge of his Bhakti movement, which was officially called Kabir Panth. Rahul Gandhi also attached a picture from Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala’s Wayanad, where two elephants are seen crossing a road. His remarks came amid the political war over the death of a pregnant elephant caused by eating a pineapple stuffed with fire crackers in Kerala’s Palakkad district. The pregnant elephant had died in the slushy water of the river Velliyar on May 27. Kerala Forest Department team probing the killing of the pregnant elephant is learnt to have taken two persons into custody. The local Manarakadu police station on Wednesday registered a case in the gruesome incident...
