Baghdad, (Samajweekly) Three Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad Airport, damaging four vehicles, the Iraqi military said. The attack took place in the evening when the rockets were fired from Abu Gharib area, west of Baghdad’s city center, and landed in the airport, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. One of the rockets struck a car park in the airport and caused damage to four civilian cars, the JOC said. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. Baghdad Airport and the Iraqi military bases housing US troops across Iraq, as well as the US embassy in the Green Zone, have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks. More than 5,000 US troops have been deployed in Iraq to support the Iraqi forces in the battles against the Islamic State militants, mainly providing training and advising to the Iraqi forces. ..

Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. From early August, Victoria’s capital Melbourne was placed under stage four restrictions including a nightly curfew, with residents only permitted to leave their homes for work and school, exercise, medical reasons or to shop for essentials. On Monday, the state recorded just 41 new infections down from a peak of over 700 new cases recorded twice in July and August...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint New Delhi, (Samajweekly) In a scathing attack on the government on the state of public health during the coronavirus pandemic, the Congress alleged that the government failed in providing health care to its citizens. It said that even the “Gujarat Model” has been exposed. Former Union minister Kapil Sibal said while addressing a press conference that the government health sector is depended on “2G – ‘Gobar’ and ‘Gaumutra’.” “Before March 24 whenever there was any discussion on health we only heard about Gobar (cow dung) and Gaumutra (cow urine) their ‘2G’ in the health sector is based on Gaumutra and Gobar.” “The alliance partner of NDA says ‘Go Corona’,” said Sibal, lashing out at Union minister Ramdas Athwale who was heard chanting ‘Go Corona’ in various videos. “What kind of scientific thought is this? Is this how we will make ourselves self-reliant? By using 2G which is Gobar and Gaumutra for scientific research? That cannot be the kind of public discourse that we are having,” added Sibal. Sibal was questioning the government on the announcement of self reliance package and said this is a new slogan. He alleged that 40 per cent of all active pharmaceutical ingredients are imported from China and we have imported Rs 249 billion worth of such ingredients in 2019...
