Farooq convenes meeting of senior NC leaders

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has called a meeting of senior party leaders on Thursday, days after the J&K government told the court that the party leadership is free and not under any kind of detention. A National Conference statement said that Party President Farooq Abdullah has invited senior party members including Ali Mohammad Sagar, Abdul Rahim Rather, Mohammad Shafi Uri and Nasir Aslam Wani for a meeting at his residence on 20.8.2020 at 5 pm. “National Conference has taken cognisance of the stand taken by the Government in Hon’ble High Court in the Habeas Corpus matters filed by the President and Vice President of the party for securing the liberty of various leaders of the party that have been under an illegal house detention,” a party statement read. “On a perusal of the reply the party has noticed that the government has unequivocally submitted before the High Court that no leader is under detention and that they are free to move subject to necessary security arrangements.” The statement further read that the party is mindful of the present pandemic and accordingly the meeting with various leaders that have been under detention will be done in batches of four members per meeting. “Needless to add that all SOPs shall be strictly followed by all concerned,” the statement read. “The Party is hopeful that the liberty of the members under detention is now absolute and the meeting is held successfully on the appointed day.”..

Farooq Abdullah meets senior NC leaders

The meeting was convened days after the government told the court that the leaders are free and not under detention. Among those present in the meeting included National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, provincial president Kashmir Nasir Aslam Wani, former minister Abdul Rahim Rather, senior leader Mohd Shafi Uri and National Conference MPs Hasnain Masoodi and Akbar Lone. “Today our meeting was merely to see whether our colleagues can come out of their homes as claimed by the government,” Farooq said. He did not talk about the political strategy of his party after the abrogation of Article 370 and said that it would be decided after due deliberations with the party leadership. “The future political strategy can be revealed only after all the detained leaders are released,” he said. He said an all-party meeting which could not be organised earlier would be held in the future. He said the National Conference stands with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and wants her and every other leader to move freely without any problems. “We want her to be free,” he said. “I am in constant touch with her; she is a signatory to the Gupkar declaration.”..

Lawyers move SC against policemen over PHQ protest

New Delhi, Several lawyers moved the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking departmental probe against the Delhi Police personnel, who protested in front of the Delhi Police headquarters (PHQ) at ITO on November 5. The plea in the high court, filed by Rakesh Kumar Lakhra, also seeks disciplinary action against several IPS officers and senior cops, including Madhur Verna, Aslam Khan, Meghna Yadav and Sanyukta Parashar, for circulating provocative statements on social media. It was in complete violation of prevalent laws, it said. The petition is likely to come up for hearing on November 8. Another petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, seeking disciplinary action and registration of first information report (FIR) against the cops involved in the recent protest at the PHQ...
