Teachers lack confidence in teaching about Islam

Many teachers, including RE specialists, lack confidence when it comes to teaching about Islam, research by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) has revealed. To help address the issue and improve the understanding and representation of Islam and Muslims, RE Today has created a new cross-phase teaching resource: Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims. According to an online poll conducted in May 2020, 25 percent of primary and secondary teachers said they were ‘not very confident’, ‘not confident at all, or ‘not sure’ when asked about their views on teaching about Islam. The poll echoes a 2018 survey of primary teachers, which found that only 52 percent felt confident teaching about Islam, compared with 95 percent who were assured about teaching Christianity. The studies also reflect a lack of understanding about Islam in wider society. A report by Ipsos Mori in 2018 reported that 57 percent of the British public did not feel that they had much knowledge or understanding of Islam, and that misconceptions are often widespread. At its conference last year, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers raised concerns about parents withdrawing their children from lessons on Islam. RE Today’s new teaching resource ‘Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims’ features 24 picture cards and 72 learning activities and lesson ideas, connecting central Muslim concepts and ways of living. Nisha Jagdish Parche is based in Pune and Chief Executive Manav Mukti Sangram and Director Kranti Jyoti, an organisation working for the socio -economic empowerment of the Bahujan women. She started working in the community of Swachchkars since she was 18 years old. Her aim is to get the community out of the manual scavenging and push them to do other professional work, encourage the young to dream better and through education. She was also the City President of National Safai Mazdoor Congress, Pune. Unfortunately, the Union was not keen that people leave this sanitation work but reinforcing this on them and that compelled here to resign from the organisation. She completed her graduation working with community only. She was preparing for the UPSC but because of her health problems could not do so. In 2013 she came in touch with Manuski, a Pune based Ambedkarite Buddhist organisation and read Annihilation of Castes, written by Baba Saheb Ambedkar which gave birth to a new Ambedkarite Nisha, who is argumentative and rationalist-humanist. Covid-19: Indo-Pak check post in Punjab’s Attari closed

Chandigarh, The movement of people and commodities from Pakistan at the joint check post (JCP) at Attari near Amritsar in Punjab was suspended indefinitely on Friday as a precautionary measure against coronavirus, officials said. Also, commodities arriving from Afghanistan via Pakistan would also not be allowed to enter India through this Attari-Wagha JCP, around 30 km from Amritsar, a Customs official told IANS. Travel by Indian devotees from Dera Baba Nanak town through the Kartarpur Sahib corridor to visit Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Shakargarh tehsil in Narowal district of Pakistan is also likely to be suspended soon, it was learnt. The 4.1 km corridor links Dera Baba Nanak town in Gurdaspur district with Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara. The trade with Pakistan across the Attari-Wagha border has already been low after the levy of 200 per cent trade tariff on goods by India after the Pulwama attack.
