Delhi restaurant served closure notice for hosting b’day party

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A restaurant in Rajouri Garden, which hosted a birthday party flouting social distancing norms and served ‘Hookah to the guests, has been served closure notice by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The closure notice has been served by the health officials of the civic body, which asked to close the restaurant within 48 hours of receiving the notice. As per sources, the restaurant faces sealing and action under the Pandemic Act. The popular eating joint in Rajouri Garden, which reopened after being shut for almost three months, landed in trouble as 38 persons were arrested for celebrating a birthday party there on Monday while allegedly violating all social distancing norms. “While a total of 38 persons were apprehended, four people, including the owner of the restaurant, were found responsible for the offence and hence, were arrested but were released on bail later,” the police had said, adding that ‘hookahs’ were also being served during the party...

Approached UK for Nawaz Sharif’s extradition: Pak PM’s aide

Islamabad, (Samajweekly) Terming former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif an “absconder”, the Prime Minster’s Adviser on Accountability and Interior, Shahzad Akbar, has said that his four-week bail on medical grounds expired in December last year and the government had already approached the UK government for his extradition. “The government is treating him (Sharif) as an absconder and has already sent a request to the British government to extradite him,” Akbar said while addressing a press conference in Lahore on Saturday. “His strolling on London roads is a slap in the face of the judiciary and the government cannot allow this. There is nothing personal in it: we are only trying to implement the law and fulfil its requirements,” he maintained. Akbar said that the government would request the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to pursue Sharif’s extradition as well and it was also looking into legalities of guarantees of Shahbaz Sharif, who was supposed to escort his elder brother back to Pakistan after his medical treatment, the Dawn reported. Akbar also claimed that the ex-premier submitted fake lab reports. He said that on October 29 last year the court granted Sharif eight-week bail for treatment within Pakistan and on November 16, he got a four-week permission to travel abroad for treatment. According to Akbar, the former Prime Minister was supposed to keep the court and the Punjab government updated about his treatment by sharing the details of the process of his treatment and test reports which he didn’t do. New Delhi, A delegation of students of Delhi University’s all-girls Gargi College will meet Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal here on Friday regarding an ongoing probe into sexual harassment by a mob of outsiders on February 6. “The meeting is scheduled around 2 pm, wherein students will seek to know the status of the probe,” Rahul Tahilayani, Personal Secretary to Maliwal, told IANS. A number of students of Gargi College in south Delhi had alleged manhandling and sexual harassment by outsiders who had gatecrashed the campus during the annual cultural fest ‘Reverie’. A third-year college student said the aggrieved students were ready to file an RTI application to seek relevant information from authorities. A fact-finding committee that recorded and examined testimonies of more than 600 students so far has found that the Internal Complaints Committee in the college was allegedly grossly biased and compromised. Khan’s lawyer Irfan Ghazi said, “The Mathura jail administration informed us at 11.00 p.m. that Dr. Kafeel Khan is being released around midnight, he walked out of jail.” The Allahabad High Court had quashed his detention under the National Security Act and ordered his immediate release. Khan was in jail since January after he delivered an allegedly provocative speech at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December last year. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, passed the order on a petition filed by Khan’s mother Nuzhat Parveen. The petition argued that Khan was granted bail in February by a competent court and he was supposed to be released on bail. Delhi riots: Court grants bail to three PFI members

New Delhi, A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to three Popular Front of India (PFI) members in a riot case, observing that the “offence invoked in the FIR are bailable in nature”. The three were arrested for offences under Section 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Metropolitan Magistrate Prabh Deep Kaur directed PFI Delhi chief Parvez Ahmed, Secretary Mohammad Iliyas and member Mohammad Danish to be enlarged on bail on furnishing a bond of Rs 30,000. “Investigating Officer (IO) has nowhere mentioned that any of the non-bailable offences has been disclosed or has come out during investigation till now, therefore, accused be enlarged on bail,” the judge observed. The court, however, imposed a rider and directed the accused to cooperate with the IO during the investigation, not leave country without informing the court or tamper with the evidence. The court further pulled up the IO and said, “It is a settled principle that in bailable offences, it is the duty of the IO to offer bail to the accused persons at first instance. There is no explanation by the IO why he has not offered bail to the accused as per constitutional as well as procedural mandate.”..
