3 dead in B’luru, 110 arrested for rioting over FB post

Over 100 rioters have been arrested, said the police on Wednesday. Around 60 police personnel have sustained injuries in the violent incidents of stone pelting and attacks by rioters that erupted on Tuesday evening. Police had to resort to firing in order to bring the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of the violence. City Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said that 110 rioters have been arrested in connection with the violence. He also tweeted that the nephew of local MLA, accused of circulating an offensive Facebook post, has been arrested. Police officials said that protestors had rained bottles at a police van transporting police personnel to the affected area. Property of the Congress Legislator from Pulakeshi Nagar constituency was attacked and vandalised while several police vehicles were damaged in the violence unleashed by the irate mob on Tuesday...

Liquor to cost more in Karnataka with 17% tax hike

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With 17 per cent increase in taxes, including 6 per cent additional excise duty (AED), select liquors would cost more in Karnataka from Thursday, an official said on Wednesday. “The state Finance Department has increased tax on select liquors by 17 per cent, including 11 per cent excise duty and 6 per cent AED passed in the state budget for fiscal 2020-21 in March to mobilise more revenue,” Deputy Commissioner, Excise, J. Giri told IANS here. As liquor shops reopened on Monday after 40 days of extended lockdown and sales shot up due to huge demand, official sources said the state government does not anticipate fall in consumption, as the hike was modest compared to similar tax hikes in other states. As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Demand for liquor remained high for the third consecutive day, as sales increased to Rs 231.6 crore on Wednesday, as customers bought 39 lakh litres of IML and 7 lakh litres of beer against sales of Rs 197 crore on Tuesday and Rs 45 crore on Monday...

Karnataka records 515 Covid cases in a day’s span

The new case take the state’s tally to 4,835. “New cases reported from Thursday 5 p.m. to Friday 5 p.m., 515,” said a health official. On Friday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Mandya, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru Rural. Udupi saw a record 204 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Yadgir (74), Vijayapura (53), Kalaburagi (42), Bidar (39), Belagavi (36), Mandya (13), Bengaluru Rural (12), Bengaluru Urban (10), Dakshaina Kannada (8), Uttara Kannada (7), Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (3 each), Haveri and Ramanagara (2 each) and Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar (1 each). Raichur did not record a case and Hassan only three. Of the new cases, 363 were men and 152 were women. On a positive note, 83 people got discharged in the past 24 hours. Bengaluru,(Samajweekly) The unprecedented and extended lockdown to contain the coronavirus spread has virtually stalled Karnataka’s growth story, as development plans envisaged in the state budget for fiscal 2020-21 remain a non-starter, said experts. “As the virus disrupted normal life, paralysed every sector and crippled the economy as never before, development and growth will depend upon when Karnataka will get over the pandemic, as the entire state machinery is busy in grappling with the infection,” noted economist M.R. Narayan told IANS here. Within 10 days after Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa presented the state budget for this fiscal on March 5, he announced a partial lockdown in this tech city from March 16 and extended it to March 31 even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a nationwide lockdown from March 25 and extended it up to May 31 with gradual relaxations of its restrictions to restore normal life. “With every activity coming to a standstill, including movement of people in cities and towns across the state due to the extended lockdown, there was neither spending nor consumption. Unfortunately, like the rest of the country and other states, Karnataka too ended fiscal 2019-20 and began the new fiscal (2020-19) on a grim note, with its estimates and projections going haywire,” said another economist on the condition of anonymity. Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) To bring quick relief to farmers, flower growers, washermen, barbers, auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers — some of the worst-affected by the Covid-19 induced lockdown, the Karnataka government on Wednesday announced a Rs 1,610-crore package to diverse sectors of the economy across the southern state. “The state government will provide Rs 1,610-crore compensation/benefit to the people who are in distress due to the lockdown since March 25 and extended till May 17 to contain the coronavirus pandemic spread,” Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa told reporters here. Among the beneficiaries of the special relief package are farmers and growers of flowers, vegetables and fruits, washermen, barbers, auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers who all suffered huge losses due to the prolonged lockdown, which has been extended twice since April 15 and May 4 till May 17. “As growers have destroyed their flowers in 11,687 hectares due to lack of demand during the lockdown, Rs 25,000 compensation per hectare will be given to those who suffered crop loss to the extent of 1 hectare,” said Yediyurappa. A separate relief package will be announced soon to farmers and growers of vegetables and fruits as they too suffered huge amount of losses due to the lockdown, said the chief minister on the occasion. Similarly, service professionals such as 2,30,000 barbers and 60,000 washermen (dhobis) in urban and rural areas, who too have been affected by the lockdown, will be given one-time compensation of Rs 5,000 each...
