Leading a massive procession to demand the ouster of illegal migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh living in India –a figure he pegged at over two crore — Thackeray said: “A thorough clean-up operation is a must.” Coming out in support of the CAA, he said it has been in existence since 1955, and was intended to give citizenship to persecuted “minorities” in Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan, but the circumstances have changed since then. “The Muslims are taking out morchas around the country…I don’t see the point. Why do they need to make a show of strength? We have nothing against the Indian Muslims… they are ours. Delhi turnout a ‘satisfactory’ 62.59%, announces EC

New Delhi, After a row over the delay in announcing total voter turnout for Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, Chief Election Officer Ranbir Singh on Sunday evening blamed the delay on collation of data. Singh informed media that the final voter turnout was 62.59 per cent, which he termed “satisfactory”. He said that the Delhi Cantt seat witnessed the lowest turnout with only 45.4 per cent voters exercising their right to vote, while Ballimaran in old Delhi witnessed the highest, at 71.66 per cent of voters. Okhla Assembly constituency, which houses the anti-CAA hot spot of Shaheen Bagh, saw only 58.84 per cent turnout. Allaying the apprehensions of the Aam Aadmi Party over alleged transportation of EVMs in DTC buses, Singh said the EVMs in question were “reserve” one and a meeting took place at 2p.m. on Sunday in the presence of all representatives of all political parties, following which all expressed satisfaction. I was not aware about her act till a friend called and told me about it last (Friday) night,” Oswald Naronha told a local news channel from his home at Koppa in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district. Koppa is about 320km west of Bengaluru in the southern state. Earlier in the day, Amulya was sent to 14-day judicial custody after police arrested and produced her before a local magistrate in a sedition case filed suo motu against her. “I also advised her not to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for enacting the CAA. She does not listen to us. She has gone out of our control. I am sad and unhappy that she got into trouble for her views,” Naronha lamented...

Khan’s lawyer Irfan Ghazi said, “The Mathura jail administration informed us at 11.00 p.m. that Dr. Kafeel Khan is being released around midnight, he walked out of jail.” The Allahabad High Court had quashed his detention under the National Security Act and ordered his immediate release. Khan was in jail since January after he delivered an allegedly provocative speech at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December last year. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, passed the order on a petition filed by Khan’s mother Nuzhat Parveen. The petition argued that Khan was granted bail in February by a competent court and he was supposed to be released on bail. However, he was not released for four days and the NSA was subsequently invoked against him. Hence, his detention was illegal, the petition stated...

Yediyurappa on Friday alleged that the college student activist had links with Maoists. Amulya’s father Oswald Naronha, however, denied the charge and called for an inquiry into it. “As Amulya’s links with Naxalites (Maoists) were proved in an investigation by the state police, she must be punished and action will also be taken against the people behind her,” Yediyurappa said at Mysuru, about 150 kms west of Bengaluru in the southern state.
