Service chiefs call on Rajnath to review border security

New Delhi, The three service chiefs of India’s armed forces called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday for a meeting to review the prevalent security scenario along the country’s borders, with particular focus on the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. The meeting came in the backdrop of Pakistan’s continuous offensive along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir through ceasefire violations ever since India abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution which granted special status to the state on August 5. “Particular focus was given on the threat posed by Pakistan along the LoC with India. The Defence Minister reviewed the prevailing security situation along India’s borders with its neighbouring countries in his meeting with the three service chiefs. Security situation along the entire international border of India was discussed during the course of the meeting,” sources told IANS. As per sources, the three service chiefs — Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh — were asked by Rajnath to maintain continuous alert and vigil along the borders...

Sig Sauer rifles to add to army’s combat lethality

New Delhi, The US-made heavy-calibre Sig Sauer assault rifles are set to boost the combat lethality of Indian troops. The first batch of these rifles will be given to them this December. As per the deal signed in February by the Ministry of Defence with US arms major Sig Sauer, 72,400 rifles will be purchased at Rs 700 crore. These assault rifles will suit the army’s operational tactic of ‘shoot to kill’ instead of incapacitation’, according to defence experts. These weapons may give an upper hand to troops in insurgency-hit areas. Troops are at present dependent on the INSAS rifles and have to wait for indigenous mass production of AK-203 rifles of Russian origin, the experts say. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said, here last week, by the end of year the first batch of the Sig Sauer rifles would arrive in a dismantled state and would be provided to troops after being assembled in the country. The INSAS, designed by the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), was inducted into the army in 1994. ‘Joint Services Act will ease disciplinary, admin issues’

New Delhi, A Joint Services Act should be instituted in India to cover administrative and disciplinary issues of all three armed forces, defence experts said on Thursday. A single Act has been sought to replace individual acts that have been, for decades, governing the three different armed forces of India, resulting in lack of synergy amongst them. The need for a Joint Services Act, experts told IANS, has been felt for a long time in line with the system adopted by most advanced militaries across the globe. The issue has been raised afresh during the ongoing Army Commanders Conference in New Delhi against the backdrop of the Central government’s decision to create the position of a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for the country. The Indian Army is governed by the Army Act, 1950 while the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force also have their own acts, known respectively as the Navy Act, 1957 and the Air Force Act, 1950. “Since each service has its own Act, in tri-service institutions, the chief does not have jurisdiction over officials belonging to services other than his own. It is a weak arrangement and creates disciplinary problems. Disciplinary and administrative issues of any official within a tri-service institution has to be dealt with the particular service commander to which that official belongs,” former Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff, Lt Gen Satish Dua (retd), told IANS...
