Washington, (Samajweekly) Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has urged charges against police who shot two black Americans, Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor. Speaking in Delaware on Wednesday, Biden did not specify what counts should be brought in the cases, which have fuelled racial justice protests nationwide, the BBC reported. The Democrat spoke after notching up a record fundraising haul in August. He has a lead over President Donald Trump, a Republican, in opinion polls ahead of November’s election. During a news conference in his hometown of Wilmington on Wednesday, Biden was asked whether he agreed with his running mate, Kamala Harris, that the officers in the Blake and Taylor cases should be charged. “I think we should let the judicial system work its way,” he said. “I do think at a minimum, they need to be charged, the officers.” Blake, 29, was shot seven times in the back and paralysed during an arrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on 23 August. Panaji, The main opposition Congress in Goa on Wednesday condemned Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar’s threat to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against over 200 lifeguards who are on strike demanding prompt payment of wages and better work conditions. A day after Ajgaonkar, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, threatened to invoke ESMA against the striking lifeguards, state Congress spokesperson Swati Kerkar reiterated the party’s demand to sack the Tourism Minister for his shoddy handling of beach safety and maintenance issues, including the strike by lifeguards. “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should immediately remove Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar from the Cabinet for his arrogant and insensitive remark against the lifeguards who are only protesting against delay in payment of salaries and want humane work conditions,” Kerkar said. Over 200 of the 600-strong force of lifeguards employed by a private beach maintenance and safety contractor Drishti Marine, have been on strike since last week, triggering a political war of words between the Congress and the BJP. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi has offered to step down from the party’s top post but it was rejected by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as he asked her to continue, this was revealed at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting underway on Monday. The letter of Sonia Gandhi to the people who wrote to her demanding a change in the leadership, said that she wanted to be relieved. Sonia Gandhi’s letter was read by party General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal at the meeting of the highest decision making body of the Congress. Sonia Gandhi also offered to quit and said the process should be initiated to elect a new Congress President. She has referred to a letter written to her by senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.
