Yes Bank posts staggering Q3 standalone net loss of Rs 18,560 cr

Mumbai, Financially troubled Yes Bank on Saturday reported a standalone net loss of Rs 18,560.31 crore for the third quarter of the financial year 2019-20. This is amongst the biggest losses reported by the India Inc. At present, the private lender is under a moratorium and is controlled by the office of the administrator appointed by the RBI. The bank had reported a net profit of Rs 1,001.85 crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Besides, the bank’s total income fell to Rs 6,268.50 crore from Rs 8,849.81 crore earned during the October-December quarter of the previous fiscal. On consolidated basis, Yes Bank reported a net loss of Rs 18,564.24 crore for the December quarter from a net profit of Rs 1,000.57 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The independent auditor’s review report on the consolidated results pointed out that there is a “material uncertainty related to going concern” of the bank. “The said assumption of going concern is dependent upon the degree of success of the final reconstruction scheme, the quantum of capital infused into the bank and the bank’s ability to stabalise its deposit balances post withdrawal of the moratorium by the RBI. Our conclusion is not modified in respect of this matter,” the auditor said...

And you know, that will be challenging,” Powell made the remarks in a virtual discussion with former Fed Vice Chairman Alan Blinder, held by the Princeton University, on Friday. He said a full recovery of the economy will really depend on people being confident that it is safe to go out and safe to engage in a broad range of economic activities, reports Xinhua news agency. “That’s how the economy will recover,” he said. “I think a second wave could be what would really undermine public confidence and might make for a significantly longer recovery, weaker recovery.” When asked about the Fed’s stance on negative interest rates, Powell said “we don’t think that that’s an inappropriate tool here in the US”. “I would say the evidence on whether it actually works is mixed,” he said. “There were clearly some negative side effects.” In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Fed cut interest rates to near zero at two unscheduled meetings in March and began purchasing massive quantities of US treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities to repair financial markets...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As the economy reels under the pandemic and post lockdown woes, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das is of the view that extreme risk aversion by financial institutions will have adverse outcomes for all. Noting that India’s financial system remains sound, Das, in his foreword to the RBI’s latest Financial Stability Report, wrote that in the current environment, the need for financial intermediaries to proactively augment capital and improve their resilience has acquired top priority. “In the evolving milieu, while risk management has to be prudent, extreme risk aversion would have adverse outcomes for all,” he wrote. The Governor’s statement gains significance as concerns have been raised that banks are still risk averse and are largely shying away from lending in general, except for the sovereign guaranteed ECLGS loans for MSMEs. The Financial Stability Report for July 2020 also shows that bank credit, which had considerably weakened during the first half of 2019-20, slid down further in the subsequent period with the moderation becoming broad-based across bank groups. “Subdued bank credit shows clear signs of risk aversion,” the report said. The Governor also said that currently there is growing disconnect between the movements in certain segments of financial markets and real sector activity. Separate guidance for reopening schools has been published for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the BBC reported. In Scotland, schools have already reopened, while some students in Northern Ireland will return to school on Monday. In England and Wales, in-person classes are set to begin in September.
