Aus state extends Covid-19 lockdown for 2 more weeks

Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. From early August, Victoria’s capital Melbourne was placed under stage four restrictions including a nightly curfew, with residents only permitted to leave their homes for work and school, exercise, medical reasons or to shop for essentials. Why is there so much of hatred towards JNU in India’s rich urban savarna class and the root lies in that whatever me the fault line inside JNU and I have said it many time that caste supremacy of the elite remain intact in the JNU, yet it has also provided space to a huge number of groups which would not have got it in any other university. In the last few years, organisations like Birsa Ambedkar Phule Student Association ( BAPSA) has emerged a powerful tool to mobilise the students from the marginalised sections and they have challenged the main power groups. There are other groups too. Ofcourse, it remain the only place where the left student unions still holds their impressive influence over the students and the reason is the huge diversity and representation of wider sections in JNU, a unique point of the University. But this uniqueness is under the challenge now. As JNU provided these spaces and now a large number of the scholars from deprived sections are emerging and challenging the popular narrative and questioning the authorities as well as building alternative narratives and ideas, the dominant forces remain afraid of these new emerging ideas. Basically, it is not a war on JNU but frankly war on India’s Dalit Bahujan classes and their scholars to ensure quality education remain out of their reach...

Johnson sets Oct 15 deadline for EU trade deal

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...

The tunnel, started experimentally, has the mechanism to spray people with chemicals to kill all germs. It is fitted with a sensor which would start a motor as soon as person enters it. The sprinklers attached to the motor would spray water mixed with hydrogen peroxide which would kill the gemcides on the person’s dress and body. The new case take the state’s tally to 4,835. “New cases reported from Thursday 5 p.m. to Friday 5 p.m., 515,” said a health official. On Friday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Mandya, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru Rural. Udupi saw a record 204 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Yadgir (74), Vijayapura (53), Kalaburagi (42), Bidar (39), Belagavi (36), Mandya (13), Bengaluru Rural (12), Bengaluru Urban (10), Dakshaina Kannada (8), Uttara Kannada (7), Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (3 each), Haveri and Ramanagara (2 each) and Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar (1 each). Raichur did not record a case and Hassan only three. Of the new cases, 363 were men and 152 were women. On a positive note, 83 people got discharged in the past 24 hours.
