Houston to conduct Covid-19 antibody testing survey

Houston, (Samajweekly) An antibody testing survey will be conducted in the US city of Houston, Texas that will help officials understand how many people were previously infected with Covid-19, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced. During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Turner said the city’s health department is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine to perform the antibody testing survey, reports Xinhua news agency. The survey will help health officials identify people previously infected with the virus by the presence of antibodies, proteins the body’s immune system makes to fight infections. Local media quoted officials as saying that homes will be randomly selected across the Houston area for the survey. Those homes will be visited by team members of the health department and Houston Fire Department paramedics. Household members will be asked to answer questions and provide a blood sample, officials said. The two-phased program is expected to begin on September 8. At Wednesday’s briefing, Turner said that the city has not reached its 5 per cent goal in positivity rate, asking people to continue to wear masks and be careful when more businesses begin to open. Celebrate or not : Whose festivals are they ?

The festival season is not over yet now. Something is today and will continue for next six days till the Chhath comes. A careful analysis will tell you how we celebrate male supremacy during these festivities. Just a few days before Diwali, you have Karwachauth and now in next one or two days, you have Bhai dooj and then Chhath too will give you a glimpse of celebrations for sons. India is a continent and therefore will have more festivals than anybody else. There is cultural crisis and cultural hegemony through festivals too. Patriarchy too is enforced through them. Now, lots of researches and narratives to justify them. Many people dont want to celebrate it because they feel this is not their identity. Others suffer in continuous confusion as to what do you say when some body ‘greet’ you with ‘ Happy Diwali’. Friends are confused in it. ‘ How do I answer their happy diwali greetings when I am not a Hindu, said a Buddhist friend. There are number of them who are now suggesting that there is a reference to Deepdanostsav in Buddhism while other suggest that such festivals dont exists in Buddhist countries. Lots of debate should we be celebrating Hindu festivals or not or shouldnt we ? Now, this crisis is not with Muslims or Christians as they are clear about their identity and hence they participate in Diwali and Holi in the similar way, as we might participate in Eid and Christmas. The issue is so much in our mind that if a politician greet people ( who is not expected to celebrate Diwali), we get disturbed and blame him as ‘sold out’...

India records 61K new corona cases, tally crosses 31L

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) With 61,407 fresh Coronavirus infections in 24 hours, India’s tally mounted to 31,06,348 on Monday, while the death toll climbed to 57,542 with 836 more fatalities, said the Health Ministry. Recoveries have crossed the 23-lakh mark and surged to 23,38,035 with 57,469 more people recuperating in the past 24 hours, taking the recovery rate to 74.90 per cent. The actual caseload of the country is the active cases, which currently stands at 7,10,771. India’s journey to the 31-lakh mark Covid cases took 208 days since the emergence of the first case on January 30. On July 17, the country logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh in 20 days on August 7 and added over 10 lakh cases in just 16 days. The case fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die from the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to 1.86 per cent, the Ministry said. As many as 6,09,917 samples were tested on Sunday. Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 6,82,383 cases and 22,253 deaths; followed by Tamil Nadu with 3,79,385 cases and 6,517 deaths. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Bihar come next. On the global front, India continues to be the third worst-hit after the US with 57,01,557 cases and 1,76,797 deaths, followed by Brazil with 36,05,783 infections and 1,14,744 deaths...

Lai was arrested on Monday, and his newspaper offices raided by hundreds of police, in scenes that shocked many. Speaking after his release on bail, Lai told the BBC he believed his arrest was “just the beginning”. There will be “a long fight” ahead for Hong Kong’s freedoms, he added. Lai, who has been a prominent pro-democracy voice and a supporter of protests that erupted last year, owns Apple Daily, one of Hong Kong’s most-read newspapers. He and nine other activists were detained on Monday over allegations including collusion with foreign forces, under a national security law imposed by China in June. The sweep of arrests has raised fears that China will use the new law to undertake a broad crackdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists and media figures. Speaking to Newshour on the BBC World Service, Lai said he was surprised when he saw police arrive at his home on Monday morning. While he had been arrested before, this was “more scary” because it came under the national security law imposed by China, he said.
