UN chief warns of impending global food emergency amid pandemic

United Nations, (Samajweekly) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the number of people who are acutely food or nutrition insecure will rapidly expand. “There is more than enough food in the world to feed our population of 7.8 billion people. But, today, more than 820 million people are hungry. And some 144 million children under the age of five are stunted — more than one in five children worldwide. Our food systems are failing, and the COVID-19 pandemic is making things worse,” the UN chief said in his video message for the launch of UN policy brief on the impact of COVID-19 on food security and nutrition on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported. The secretary-general warned that unless immediate action is taken, it is increasingly clear that “there is an impending global food emergency that could have long term impacts on hundreds of millions of children and adults.” “This year, some 49 million extra people may fall into extreme poverty due to the COVID-19 crisis,” he said. Every percentage point drop in global gross domestic product means an additional 0.7 million stunted children, he said. “Even in countries with abundant food, we see risks of disruptions in the food supply chain.” “We need to act now to avoid the worst impacts of our efforts to control the pandemic,” the UN chief noted. To tackle the dire situation, Guterres urged the international community to “mobilize to save lives and livelihoods, focusing attention where the risk is most acute.” “That means designating food and nutrition services as essential, while implementing appropriate protections for food workers,” he said...

Govt taking steps to control onion prices: Sitharaman

New Delhi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said that the government has taken a host of measures, including imports, to deal with the rising prices of onions and there are several structural issues related to their storage which the government is trying to address. “Steps are being taken other than procurement,” she told Lok Sabha while replying to the debate on Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2019-20 where she also said export of onions have been banned and tender have been floated for its import. The Minister also told MPs the government has also decided to import to procure from the open market of countries with a surplus and from onion-growing regions. She further added steps are being taken for distribution of the onion through open mandis auction .She also said that the government plugged all loopholes through DBT and “all dalals and middlemen have been eliminated from the system”.Prices of onions in many places have crossed Rs 100 per kg in many places due to shortage. Steps taken by the government to check rising prices of onions include ban on exports, imposition of stock limits, import and transfer of onion from surplus to deficit areas.Lok Sabha later passed the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants allowing the government to spend an additional Rs 21,246.16 crore, including over Rs 8,820 crore in the newly formed Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh in the current fiscal ending March 2020...

Global Covid-19 cases top 23.8mn: Johns Hopkins

Washington, (Samajweekly) The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 23.8 million, while the deaths have increased to over 818,000 according to the Johns Hopkins University. Cyclone alert for Bengal, Odisha as ‘Amphan’ intensifies

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a cyclone alert for West Bengal and north Odisha coasts as an extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ was over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal. In a statement, the IMD said, “The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘AMPHAN’ (pronounced as UM-PUN) over the central parts of South Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past six hours, has intensified into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centred at 0230 hrs IST of today, the 18th May, 2020 over central parts of South Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.9°N and longitude 86.4°E, about 820 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha), 980 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1090 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).” “It is very likely to intensify further during next six hours.
