US COVID-19 cases top 2.1 million

New York state steps up reopening

New York, (Samajweekly) The US state of New York is reopening faster than expected due to the progress in various metrics in combating COVID-19. The death toll from the coronavirus in the state, the epicentre of the pandemic in the US, dropped to a new low since the beginning of the pandemic at 35 on Friday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday at his daily briefing. “This is really, really good news. Compared to where we were, this is a big sigh of relief,” Xinhua news agency quoted Cuomo as saying. Meanwhile, the number of total hospitalizations in the state was down on Friday to 2,603 from a record-high of 18,825 during the peak of the pandemic. “The reopening of the economy is a valve — we said we were going to open the valve incrementally and then watch the metrics, and our metrics today are all very good so we’re going to open the valve more than we originally anticipated,” said Cuomo. The Governor announced that the state’s places of worship will be permitted to reopen with 25 per cent occupancy during phase two of reopening, and visitors must follow social distancing protocols. Places of worship in the state’s seven regions that are already in phase two will open on Sunday, he said. As offices have started to reopen in phase two, the governor said he would issue an executive order allowing commercial buildings statewide to conduct temperature checks for people entering the building. “We’re giving commercial buildings the right to take the temperature of everyone who walks into a building. Safal to provide tomato puree at Rs 25 per pack in Delhi

New Delhi, To alleviate the problem of shortfall of tomatoes in the city, Safal will provide from Friday tomato puree from all its outlets here at Rs 25 per 200 gram pack. This pack is equivalent to about 800 grams of tomatoes. Another larger pack of 825 grams priced at Rs 85 will also be made available which is equivalent to about 2.5 kgs. The stocks have already been moved to all the outlets and the sales will begin from Friday onwards at all booths. The Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs on Thursday chaired an inter-ministerial meeting to take stock of the rise in prices of tomatoes in some parts of the country including Delhi-NCR. Paddy and basmati see increase in sown area over last year

New Delhi, Paddy acreages in the current fiscal have grown by 6.5 per cent and basmati acreages have increased by a whopping 36 per cent in comparison to kharif 2018 but the increased cultivation may turn out to be a challenge due to growth concerns at the global level and within India. National Collateral Management Services conducted a field-based crop survey for assessment of acreage, crop health and production of basmati rice during kharif 2019. The survey was commissioned by the Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF), founded by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). As per the latest kharif sowing report released by the Agriculture Ministry on September 27, all India paddy acreages are reported at 382 lakh hectares which are 1 per cent lower than 2018 paddy acreages of 387 lakh hectares. This survey is at variance with the government report and paddy cultivation is higher as per the NCML survey with total paddy acreages during kharif 2019 estimated at 6,204,000 hectares which are 6.5 per cent higher than last year’s acreage of 5,825,000 hectares.
