Congress demands sacking of Goa Dy CM over ESMA threat

Panaji, The main opposition Congress in Goa on Wednesday condemned Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar’s threat to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against over 200 lifeguards who are on strike demanding prompt payment of wages and better work conditions. A day after Ajgaonkar, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, threatened to invoke ESMA against the striking lifeguards, state Congress spokesperson Swati Kerkar reiterated the party’s demand to sack the Tourism Minister for his shoddy handling of beach safety and maintenance issues, including the strike by lifeguards. “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should immediately remove Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar from the Cabinet for his arrogant and insensitive remark against the lifeguards who are only protesting against delay in payment of salaries and want humane work conditions,” Kerkar said. Over 200 of the 600-strong force of lifeguards employed by a private beach maintenance and safety contractor Drishti Marine, have been on strike since last week, triggering a political war of words between the Congress and the BJP. While the Chief Minister has dismissed the strike as an “internal matter” between Drishti Marine and the lifeguards, the opposition has alleged the government was openly backing the private contractor over “very real” issues raised by the striking lifeguards. Three persons were arrested for raising anti-Javadekar slogans, while the Opposition workers staged a demonstration with placards saying, ‘Go Back Javadekar’, who also holds the Information and Broadcasting portfolio, outside the venue screening films for the 50th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Panaji, (Samajweekly) The arrest of Kapil Jhaveri, a small-time Bollywood actor and the director of a co-operative society, at a rave party in a North Goa beach village on Sunday has become a cause of embarrassment for the ruling political establishment in Goa. After photos of Jhaveri’s meetings with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and state Co-operation Minister Govind Gaude went viral on social media on Monday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the photo may have been taken during a courtesy meeting between Jhaveri and him last year, soon after he had taken over as the state’s CM. “With respect to the pictures circulating on various media platforms of CM Pramod Sawant meeting Bollywood actor Kapil Jhaveri, it is informed that the said picture may have been of a courtesy call last year by Kapil Jhaveri, after the CM had taken over. A large number of persons called on the CM then,” a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) late on Monday said. The statement also said that the BJP-led coalition government had a “zero tolerance” policy towards drug trafficking. Panaji, There was no palpable panic reported in Goa, unlike several other parts of the country, with provision stores and super-markets witnessing routine activity on Saturday — a day ahead of the ‘janata curfew’ — even as the prices of hand sanitisers and face masks continued to soar. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also made a public plea that the government would be facilitating necessary essential goods and supplies in the state, despite a ban imposed on passenger and tourist inflow into the state on Saturday. “The borders are sealed for the entry of all types of passenger vehicles coming through the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka from midnight today. This will not affect the movement and entry of essential goods and other cargo and bonafide residents of Goa,” Sawant told reporters at the State Secretariat on Saturday after chairing an all-party meeting to discuss precautionary measures being taken by his government in view of COVID-19. “Public are requested no to indulge in panic buying and stay away from rumours,” Sawant also said.
