Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the PTI’s core committee meeting on Sunday and reiterated the party’s demand that Election Commission hear cases of all three major political parties – PTI, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), simultaneously and refrain from singling out PTI. “The ECP should follow rules, give equal opportunities to all the parties and conduct across-the-board accountability,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters after the core committee’s meeting. She wondered why applications by the PTI against the PML-N and PPP were not being entertained...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With 17 per cent increase in taxes, including 6 per cent additional excise duty (AED), select liquors would cost more in Karnataka from Thursday, an official said on Wednesday. “The state Finance Department has increased tax on select liquors by 17 per cent, including 11 per cent excise duty and 6 per cent AED passed in the state budget for fiscal 2020-21 in March to mobilise more revenue,” Deputy Commissioner, Excise, J. Giri told IANS here. As liquor shops reopened on Monday after 40 days of extended lockdown and sales shot up due to huge demand, official sources said the state government does not anticipate fall in consumption, as the hike was modest compared to similar tax hikes in other states. As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Demand for liquor remained high for the third consecutive day, as sales increased to Rs 231.6 crore on Wednesday, as customers bought 39 lakh litres of IML and 7 lakh litres of beer against sales of Rs 197 crore on Tuesday and Rs 45 crore on Monday...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) China, the first country to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, has started pushing its People’s Liberation Army Navy’s activities in South China Sea as well as the Indian Ocean Region to gain dominance in the areas, sources said on Saturday. The 35th Chinese Anti-Piracy Escort Force (APEF) has recently replaced the 34th APEF deployed in the Gulf of Aden. “Because of it, around seven People’s Liberation Army Navy ships are in the Indian Ocean Region,” said the sources. The sources also found that China is operating 4 to 5 research vessels in the Indian Ocean Region at present. A senior government official said that even though China was the first country to be affected by the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, it seems to have had no major effect on the PLA-Navy’s activities. “Additionally, a large number of PLA-Navy/Coast Guard assets, maritime militia and survey ships are deployed in the contested waters of the South China Sea,” said the official. Intelligence agencies have reported to the government that the US and French navies, affected by coronavirus-infested crew on warships while they were deployed in South China Sea, have vacated the space for the PLA-Navy to push for its dominance and expansion in those waters. This has enabled the Chinese government to sense the vacuum and up its ante in the South China Sea over the past few weeks. Expansion in South China Sea...
